Photography Question

Kimi A. Phillips

Good Photo Mag?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good photography magazine that I could subscribe to. I am new to all this, so nothing too technical, but something I would learn from. Thanks a bunch! Kimi

Shutterbug and Popular Photography cover a wide variety of things, film & digital, PCPhoto concentrates on digital cameras and related gadgets, Digital PhotoPro centers on studio and other commercial photography, Outdoor Photographer is pretty self-explanitory.
shutterbug.com
popphoto.com
pcphotomag.com
digitalphotopro.com
outdoorphotographer.com
I know some of them offer 1 free trial issue through their website, you can try each one before you buy.

Popular Photography is really a good Magazine, and I really love the Nikon Magazine.
A lot of help there and you don't have to own a Nikon to enjoy the help there.

If you are near a Borders book store. Check out their selections. They carry a lot of mags form the UK, and I must say that the mags from across the great pond are better than those in the US.

Kimi, I subscribe to several phoot mags: Shutterbug, Popular Photog, and Outdoor Photographer. Since I am primarily an outdoor photographer, my favorite is Outdoor Photog. I got a new issue of Shutterbug today and I envision spending about 15-20 minutes going through it, reading what looks interesting, and laying it aside, never to be picked up again. I won't renew the subscription. As Debby said, Pop.Photog is very good too.

Just one photographer's opinion.

John

Kimi, visit Rangefinder's website, rangefindermag.com, if you intend to make a business out of your photography. The subscriptions are free to qualified photographers. Just fil out the quick survey online.

  I agree with Mike 100%.

If you want a bunch of advertisements, get a U.S magazine..if you want good articles w/o all the fluff, get the UK mags. Some are quite pricey, but well worth it.

Kimi, there are alot of magazines out there, but I agree with Mike and Pete about the magazines from the UK. They are much better. Some magazines have web-mags and you might check those out also.

Thank you so much everyone! I went ahead and ordered the "trial" version of several that you all mentioned. I'll check out UK mags this weekend. Thanks again!

I get Shutterbug and a UK magazine called Digital Camera (Waldenbooks/Borders or Books-a-Million). I agree with others who say there are less ads in the UK magazines - worth paying the extra.

Digital Camera is good for beginners and everyone else.

I have done A LOT of reading on photography.

I noticed that for the price you can't pass up a used photography book on Amazon to buy.

Magazines seem to always have just camera reviews (pointless if you already have everything you need or don't have the funds to buy anything new)

From there it is hit or miss. I would rather see you getting some good books to learn from and pick up a magazine at a newstand if something catches your eye.

Just my 2 cents. I do subscribe to Popular Photography, Professional Photographer, Shutterbug and Digital Photo Pro but have tons of photography books.

Het Kimi I subscribe to Pop Photo as others have suggested but I really love Practical Photography from the UK. It is $10 an issue and a US subscription is over a $100 so I get them from Barnes and Noble monthly. The only draw back being a yank is that I have no idea what the review or printed add prices are but the projects and techniques are great. By the way I enjoy your gallery very much. You call yourself "new" and a "Beginner" but no one could tell by viewing your work.
Dave

Photo Life is a great one too, but it is bimonthly. Check out the website: www.photolife.com

I too like Photo Life it's from Canada and lots of good pics and infro. I Also like DigitalPro. Many of the above are goo too. Each month I buy the one that offers me more than ads. Photo life has few but not Pop Photo. or Shutterbug I want infro and there are some from England, though a little expensive but helpful. But you have to choose which you like best so buy several peruse them and decide, most will have subscription cards in them or go to their web sites.

The really great thing about the magazines from the UK is that they have tutorials on how to use tools, etc. in Photoshop and other popular photo editing programs. They explain it in the magazine and include a CD. They do cost more, but they're really good. As far as US magazines go, I think Outdoor Photographer is one of the best.

Hi Kimi and everyone else. Here in South Africa, PIX magazine has been launched, about a year ago, and yes, I occassionaly buy some of the mag's mentioned above, but they're horrifically expensive! (And full of ad's, some of them) Go to: www.pixmag.co.za and have a look at the mag, I'm sure you can subscribe from the US, I presume you're there, and it'll cost you next to nothing with the Rand/Dollar about R7.20/USD1 !! Only problem is it only comes out every 2nd month, but we're all putting pressure on them. The articles and advice is great, the quality of the mag is A1, and the photography community is really abuzz with it, with lots of comments that its giving the international mags a good run for their money.
