First time shooting with a black backdrop

I am trying for the first time, shooting a subject with a black backdrop. How far does the subject need to be from the back drop to not have any light hit the backdrop?
I saw one thread said to shoot at iso 100, 1/125 @ f8 and 1/2 power on the softbox main light. Would this be the case for shooting a bridal portraits too?

  31 inches would be great.
What kind of equiptment are you useing.
with my cameras ( D70, D200 and fuji S2) I shoot 200/200 f22
with the Olympus I shoot 100 1/125 f9-f10.
I hope this helps,
Debby

I'm shooting with a Nikon d200.. so you shoot at iso200 with 1/200 @ f22? this will be of a bride with details in her white dress..

Yes I would start there, but since this is a Bridel Shoot,
I would be taking many of the same shot at a couple different settings and definiatly different lighting setup.
Some with gelled backlight on black some with out and same pose on other backgrounds as well.
Maybe you can try this for your self,
I got a wonderful shot (film)
of a unbelieveable dress black background rose gelled backlight,
Dramatic lighting on bride, then second backlight laying on floor pointed up underdress.
This lit up the dress in the most beautiful way.Almost angelic.
Do be careful with this shot making sure your light in NO WAY touching the dress and you stop and remove it for a few minutes if shooting it several times.
I hope this helps and you have a lot of fun with this shoot,
Debby Tabb
