Photography Question

Christopher Delaney

New arrivals page, New!

Boy you thought it was hard to get a comment before they changed the new arrivals page! Now, we are going to never get a comment! With 12 to a page, forget it, gone in a flash. I use to hope and pray my image would stay on the front page for at least a little while to get seen. Now zip its gone! Good or bad, I sure love to get comments which have been very hard to come by lately. Its extremely dissapointing, sometimes it feels very clicky here and its frustrating to see a average meow image get tons of comments and a ton of great images get natta! Oh well it was fun for a while!

Yea, I was a little dissapointed! Because It seems like I have not gotten a comment in a while and the funny thing is that I have gotten so much better. I have worked so hard on my exsposures and have taken a few local class's. I can see a huge difference in my work form when I first started to post here. Yet comments have dwindled to nill!

I quit looking at the recent uploads long ago because of the bulk uploads. If you want comments, I suggest 3 things. 1. Upload and post one a day to the contest, those uploads are seen by more people, especially if you upload in the a.m. 2. Make the first comment on your own photo in the Critical Critique forum, and lastly 3. Comment on others, or specifically send a message to someone who's opinion you respect and ask.

Yea, I have tried to time it in the am and I always throw comments out there, Oh though I have to admitt, I have slowed that up a bit. I also have sent pics into the critique section asking for help with catagory selection and maybe got one. Have got no responce there. The only good thing is I know I am not alone here. I have joined the Texas photo forum and you would not believe how many there have left here for the same reason. I am not saying I dont like it here. Its kind of my first love, lol! I have learned a ton here and will continue to suport this site. I just wish more people would comment on other photos. This is how we learn! Thanks for your input.

Well, you are right, it is sort of clickish, but that's mostly due to time constraints for many people. Most of us don't have time to wade through the whole day's worth of photos, and even if we did, some of us are reluctant to add a new person to our comment group because it does take up so much time. I know I comment pretty much only on people who upload around the same time as I do in the morning. I went through a little bit of illness lately and wasn't able to comment and my incoming ones dropped way off. So if you want comments, comment! And try to do the same people all the time and they will be more inclined to notice your name when they get familiar with it. I'm rambling a bit, so I'll quit. Hope this helps some.

Here are a couple of links to some great forums where people are eager to help and critique images. The equipment section of the first one is for Canon users but everyone is welcome. Neither will host photos but you can upload for critiques or to just show them.

It seems as if there are many unhappy people here at BP.

I love this site and won't leave, but share the same frustration you do Chris. I gave up on the Constructive Critique section because all too often I wouldn't get any responses. I would see photos that I thought were good, but saw 30-40 comments about how wonderful and started doubting my own photos. Then I started thinking I would rather have nothing then 30-40 how beautiful. That is not Constructive in my eyes.

I make it a habit to comment on about 10 photos a day time permitting. I pick randomly, sometimes for new entries, contest entries or pop into galleries from some of the discussion posts. When I get a positive comment from someone I return the favor by selecting one of my favs from their gallery.

Just my thoughts...

I think Dennis gives the best advice. Even before the BP change to larger thumbnails (which I really like!) I can't imagine too many folks used "New Arrivals" as their main source for finding images to comment on... At least not with the intention of scrolling through too many!
If you uploaded a photo, and saw it immediately on "New Arrivals," and then a Pro-Gallery owner bulk-uploaded 150 wedding shots at once---your image would be back on page 3, 4 or 5 in mere seconds.
I think the "Recent Contest Entries" gets FAR more attention from browsers and comment-writers... and the fact that it is limited to 1 entry per person per day, means only 800 or so come in per day, and those are spread out all day---so your freshly uploaded entry stays on Page 1 a little while longer, then Page 2 a bit, then 3, etc. But viewing via "New Arrivals" your image will fly off Page 1 (old style Page 1 or new style!) in a heartbeat as literally hundreds of uploads every single hour of the day, push it back at a lightning pace.
PS---I really like your composition explorations in your recent chess series!

Thanks Christopher for you're advice on this subject. I am just one of those guys who hate change! The Chess series was fun, I love my new off camera flash. It opens up a whole new world for me! Thanks again.

  Hi there,

One of my favorite sites that I see lots of comments regarding photos is dpchallenge.com. I think they have some really great ideas that I feel could greatly benefit Betterphoto.com.

Here are a few suggestions that I think could boost interest greatly.

1. Allow photo searching based on camera lens, camera body, or photographer. Many people want to see how a particular lens, camera, or specific photographer performs.

2. Allow members to bookmark favorite photographers. When these photographers upload new photos, an alert message would be sent to those who list them as favorites.

3. Create some sort of promotion system based on the number of comments you make towards other photographs. Or build some sort of reputation system that would entice photographers to comment and/or participate more.

In conclusion, I think Betterphoto has a solid foundation and hopefully will continue to grow. I take classes for inspiration and enjoy them very much.

Thanks, - Jim

Jim, They sound like good ideas. Let's hope BP listens.

I especially like the idea of being able to see photos based on the lens one shot with. I hear so often here about how it's the lens and not as much the camera that is so important but the only photos by equipment search you can do is for cameras.

I would just add that there already is a "See photos by camera body" feature on the site. (Under the "Photos" menu.)

Also, using the main search window, you can find photographers galleries assuming you know their name. (For instance, a search on Budny pulls up the link to my gallery.)

Unfortunately, to get photos by lens, you'd have to have everyone record their lens information on their photos at the time upload---many, many people do not do this, now.

As long as we're tossing out enhancement ideas, I'd like to see one that reduces the number of emails sent by BP---say, a summary every X minutes---if you've commented on someone's photo, and in the next 10 minutes, 10 people also comment on it, you'd get just 1 email saying there were new comments---not 10 emails related to that one picture ;) This would be especially useful in the days right after Finalists and Winners are announced!

  Hi everybody,

I just wanted to point out that there are a few new pages that should make it very fun and easy to find photos you'd like to comment on:

Carolyn is right... if you want comments on your photos, the best way is to comment on other members' work.

and thanks for your constructive suggestions! Jim, Christopher is right. You can search photos by camera body and by photographer (using the search engine in the upper right).

I will be the first to admit that the search results page needs to be improved, and that is one of the things on our (big) To Do list.

Also on our list, add a "Favorites" feature like you mention. That has been hot on our list for a long time. We've just been trying to catch up first. But you can expect to see that fun feature at BetterPhoto very soon.

For photos shot with a particular lens, Christopher is right. We have to collect that data first. The good news is that we may have it in EXIF information. I am not 100% if we will be able to do this, but we'll sure try.

And I love the idea of a "points" system for participation. That too has been an idea so dear to my heart for many years. But it's no small undertaking. All the same, I now have the best developers working for me, so we'll see what they can do. If they can pull that off, it will be huge!

Thanks again,
Jim
