Photography Question

New Recent Entries Page!

Wow--I just noticed the new Recent Entries page with the very large thumbnails and little "BP class graduate" icons ... Don't know if this has been discussed anywhere. What do you all think of it? I kind of like it, although it will take longer to go through the entries, since far fewer are shown on each page.

It does look more polished, and with the larger thumbnails, you really get an immediate sense of the wide variety of photographic styles and subjects being submitted. I think it draws you in more ...

I *LOVE* the new look... it is so much more flattering to the images. They look so much better at this size; I'm sure it will entice me to view more than I would have otherwise, with the tiny thumbnails---they seldom flattered an image!
And I'm thrilled with the "Remember Me" checkbox up at the sign-in!!

It looks just great!! The only thing is I'd like to see the title. But if there's not enough room, it's fine the way it is.

  Hi all,

Thanks very much for the positive, encouraging feedback. I am absolutely thrilled with these enhancements. I agree that this new layout makes the beauty of each photo really jump off the page.

Nobi - I fixed it so that the title shows up in Firefox at least.

Also, I wanted to tell you all that we have a new photo gallery section. Go click the PHOTOS button to see the four new ways you can view photos. You're going to love it! So much more fun than the old text-heavy pages.

We are really trying hard to make the site totally optimized this year - with less text and more photos. And these recent changes are wonderful examples of the excellent designers and developers we have on staff. I am so grateful to have such an outstanding team at BetterPhoto.

Please enjoy and have a wonderful spring taking... no, making great photos!

Let the fun begin!

I wasn't sure at first, but the more I look the more I like the new layout :-)

Love that I can go through all the photos of the day! Wonderful!!!

It would be nice if we could see more photos per page, like maybe 30 per page as it is in our galleries.

What is editors pick?

Thanks BP for a great web site!

I like the larger thumbnails on the Recent Entries pages, too, and don't mind having to "turn" more pages. However, despite the fact that having fewer images to view should make the pages feel cleaner, they somehow feel cluttered. I had read this thread last night and thought I was the only one who didn't really like the new look, but I just saw a comment in a discussion. A longtime BP member who submits, comments, and wins frequently said the new layout made him feel "suffocated." I knew just what he meant. Was there a large, gold and turquoise BP ad beside the thumbnails before? I know BP needs to advertise and of course it is your site, Jim, but I think the ad would be much better if it could complement the entries rather than compete with them. (I am well aware that I would never make it in advertising :) )

I really love the new look too and the Photos tab. I am with Susan though about what is the Editor's Picks or maybe a better question is how it works. Do they choose several each day or week from the recent entries as Editor's Picks? The larger thumbnails really let you see the photos better even before you click for the larger size. Nice work BP!

  Hello friends,

The "Editor's Picks" are simply recently uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found interesting, eye-catching or beautiful.

In the past, if you wanted to find new photos for discussion, you might go to "New Arrivals". The problem with that, though, is that this group is global and unedited. It's everything being uploaded to BP. So you often see duplicate photos or an entire page of one subject, for example.

The "Editor's Picks" will give you a selection of interesting photos upon which you can comment.

We still have the "New Arrivals" and "Recent Contest Entries" categories, for those of you who want to see that global set of images. But for those of you who would like to just see the unique photos that catch our eye, the "Editor's Picks" will be just the ticket.

Enjoy!

  Hi Jim or anyone else,

I'm still feeling really stupid in terms of the "Editor's Picks." I went to the "Photos" tab and clicked on "Editor's Picks." I could see the words "Editors First Picks" and nothing else in the area except a reload button and a clickable link to "View all new arrivals." I clicked on "View all new arrivals" and worked my way through 100 or more of the over 6000 pages. I found many places where there were as many as two dozen photos in a row by the same photographer--possibly because a photographer chose to upload many photos into his gallery at one time and the editors found merit in many of them??. Can this be what you are talking about or am I missing something. The rest of the page has a box with links to new galleries and another with photos by course instructors. I am using Explorer 7 as my browser.
Thanks.

Hi Nikki - the page take a few moments to load. You should see eight photos under the page headline. If the page fully loads and you don't see the picks, please email our Support team, using the Contact Us or Live Help links. Off the top of my head, I would make sure you don't have Ad Blocking turned on with a program like Norton Internet Utilities.

But the support people should be able to help you if you continue to not see the pics. I have IE 7 as well and they appear for me, so I am not sure what the problem is.

Me too--just tried to look at the Editors' Picks. I also was able to see them the other day but not today.

On another tangent ... I wonder if the Editors' Picks would be most likely to be finalists or winners in that month's contest. Seems reasonable to assume so.

Sorry, Jayne. Since I couldn't see anything and it seemed as if everyone else could--kind of like the emperor's clothes!--I had finally decided the "Recent Entries" was what they were talking about :( I can't see the Editor's Picks.   Yes, it is fixed! Thanks, Jim and BP Support.
Now, would it be possible to have a very little Editor's First Pick icon automatically attached to these photos? I don't think anyone would mind, and it could encourage those who enter the contest regularly but don't make finalist (like yours truly :) ). Members have pointed out that the membership of BP and, consequently, the number of contest submissions per category per month has multiplied many fold but the number of winners has stayed the same (don't know about the number of finalists--maybe that has grown slightly). It would be great if BP could find a way to extend the recognition slightly, and the new Editor's Picks might just be that way. I also love that it includes photos that are not entered in the contest, too. I saw very few of those in the past. Unfortunately, since the picks seem to come up randomly and there's no notification that I know of that lets a member know his/her photo is in Editor's First Picks, this isn't doing as much for members' morale as it could.

Great new addition to the site! I would agree with Nikki that it would be nice if there was some kind of icon attached to an Editor's Pick photo. One reason being that if your photo is "a pick" you have no way of knowing unless you happen to go through all the picks. If there is an icon, as suggested, you would see it in your own gallery - so at least you would know!

While the little icon idea sounds great, it might be a lot of trouble for BP staff. Maybe if we just understood more on how the Picks work, like are photos added daily while others that were there come off to make room for the new ones or are they added weekly or monthly, etc. And if the pages were fixed so that you finally cycle back around to the first page of picks, then maybe we could look at a few pages everyday, knowing sooner or later you should find your photo if it was a pick. And just so you know, I did see one of mine as a pick, but I don't mind if it doesn't have an icon attached to it, but I am glad I saw it. The way the photos come up so randomly when you click reload, I am surprised I did. I have enjoyed going through the picks though as a quick way to see some unique and/or beautiful photos.

Just to add my (contrary) two cents, I don't think another badge/button is called for in this case. I think the Picture of the Day, along with the monthly contest Finalists & Winners, are more than enough in terms of recognizing terrific images. Yes, who wouldn't want to know that one of their images "caught the eye of the editors"... but that to me seems little different than, say, if I posted a chat thread here every day and said "these are the 30 images I chose as my personal favorites, from new uploads I saw today."
The daily POTD selection, and the contest wins, in my view, are subject to some actual scrutiny and analysis criteria by BP staffers, and thus 'earn' their medals. To me, the Editor's Picks is a little more like "hey, that's a neat image, let's put it out there today." A nice tip-of-the-hat to the photographer, but IMHO, the least meaningful of the potential ways on BP to have an image recognized.

I wasn't sure how I like the new setup, as I have dial up so it takes a lot longer to look at photo's everyday. I agree, maybe a few more at a time would help.
Also, I agree with the icon on editors picks. There are so many photographers, and new people doing this contest, it may give them an incentive to stay here. It may also give them more of a feel what they need to change or to do to win.
As I look through the photo's even only being here a couple of weeks now, there are a lot of the same photographers winning everything.
Do they reset the contest entries, editors picks and the wins pages every month or do they stay there?
I also have a question on the wins, say if someone wins a 1st and second place, do they get both prizes? Then if they win the next month, does another year just get added to their account?
I do love this sight, I enjoy looking at all the photo's and imagination everyone has.
EVERYONE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and salutes to this sight!

Hi Nancy! For some of your questions:
When you win 2nd place, yes, you get a free year of the Premium Gallery---if you have one already, they add a year on. If you won a 2nd Place two months in a row, you'd get a year for each. Having never won a First and Second, I don't know if they give you the "higher prize" or both...!

As for the contest, it is reset every month in terms of entries---the March Contest just closed 3/31, and so the "Recent Entries" you look at today are all entries into the April Contest, which will close to any new entries on 4/30. You can't go back and see the thousands of March entries at this point, while March judging is underway.

Judging each monthly contest takes nearly 4 weeks, so the March Contest results will not be announced until close to the end of April. From the "Contest" link in the menu, you can go back in time and see the Finalists and Winners for any of the past months' results. The latest Contest that has been judged and announced, will determine the pic you see on the home page of BP---currently, February Winners are cycling through the home page, since that is the most recent Contest to be completed.

As for "Editor's Picks" I'm not sure yet just how often they cycle and change... I think pretty regularly, however, from what I've seen over the last few days...

Now I see a reload on the editors picks today.
I was just wondering as to how many judges there were and how you decide the winners with so many great pictures? Do you have judges for all the catagories or judges for each catagory. I surly wouldn't want the job LOL. Keep up the good work!

I really like the larger thumbnails. Today though I noticed when you want to comment on one it's tiny! It's like the whole process reversed itself. I can't even see what it was I liked about the photo. Plus, if you hit next in the large size you loose the contest catagories on top.
That's my two cents..lol

I'm assuming the Editor's first choices are the first round of the contest as they get picked. I would think any other work that would need to be done to give a coin or the like for that recognition would be an overload to the staff again. Enjoy if your photo is chosen and gets a little extra recognition. It is a great extra little feature.

My understanding is that Editor's First Picks have nothing to do with the contest. They are simply newly uploaded photos--contest entries or not--which have caught an editor's eye. If I am correct, I think this is a great way to extend recognition to those who may not choose/may not yet have chosen to enter a given photo in the contest as well as to those who may have chosen to do so at the time of or shortly after their upload. My thought was that this process could be programmed so that the recognition icon would go on the photo automatically and simultaneously with whatever action the "editor" must take to make his/her "pick." I do not think this needs to take any extra time for the staff. I am seriously technologically challenged and I may be completely wrong, but it was an idea.
I also thought this new Editor's Pick feature might have grown out of forum discussions indicating that members would like to "see deeper" into the contest process (i.e. semi-finalists, etc.). I'm thinking BP has decided that is inappropriate but that they might well extend the recognition/encouragement in some other way. After all, the membership and contest participation is surely much larger than it was a year or two or three ago.

I just came across something that is missing that I hope BP will return. When I go to recent contest entries and click on a thumbnail to enlarge the image the option to view the photographer's gallery is missing. I can go to their profile or if they have a web site I can go to that, but not the photo gallery. I use that feature frequently as I like to view other work by the photographer and since most of us have the premium gallery I think a link to our gallery would be appropriate. Please tell me this was an oversite, Jim, and that it will be coming back.

Shawn, if BP doesn't put up a convenient "gallery" button (when you're viewing the full-sized image of a Recent Entry)... just click on the photographer's name below the photo (and to the lower right)... that will take you to their "bio" and the normal gallery button appears there, too. An extra step or two, but still accessible when you need it.

The Editors first picks is a very nice feature except for one thing.... I now have become obsessive compulsive about hit the reload button over and over and over and over in the hopes that maybe one of my photos will atleast show up there. Atleast before I only got so obsessive while waiting for the finalists to come out only to not get one. But now I just hit that reload button in hopes that maybe just maybe one of my photos atleast caught the eye of someone from BP just for a minute even if it has no chance of winning pooh diddlely. I Still love the changes, this gives me something else to strive for.

While BP has added so many nice featurers, I would suggest that they should consider adding different colors to the badges/buttons; Say,

Red- Grand Prize winner
Blue- First Prize Winner
Yellow- Second Prize Winner
Grey- Finalist
Purple- Photo of the day
Green- Editor's pick

It will be more interesting, and easy to distinguish.

Girish, I like your idea. Although I wouldn't mind getting a gold button of any sort.

There is one new feature on the site that I'm not crazy about, and that's the live operator pop-up window.

When I do my monthly daydreaming about what class I'd like to take (if only I had the money), and I click on a tab for more information, I get an Instant Message and an operator asking me if I need help.

Seems to me the info is clearly laid out as to cost, content, scheduling, etc. of classes, so this pop-up window (for me at least) is not only rather intrusive, but unnecessary.

I know BP needs to make money and I hate to criticize but I wouldn't mind seeing this feature turned off.

Nancy (Peaches) Harker
Girish, I also like your idea.
I like the new feature added, as when I would load a image for the contest and then have to delete it because I did the wrong picture or changed my mind the link to the photo now stays the same. Before it used to say removed or deleted by staff. However is there not a way to load/transfer the comments with it if it is the same picture? Saying if you have a redo, or someone has commented before the chnange was made. I would still like the old comments to stay with the new photo if it is the same thing. Give a choice as to delete them or keep them.
I also wish there were more pictures on a page, 7-8 is so hard, as I said before I have dial up and is very slow. I was looking for a few photo's last night for 7 hours and the same ones came up quite often, after 6 hours new ones came once, then back to the same one with new ones now and then and some photo's three pages in a row, if it is going to cycle at random can it not cycle from beginning to end or something or just have the editors picks by pages like the entries page. I never did find 2 of them that are there. It was very frustrating after so many hours of searching and knowing they are there.
I also miss the Photographers name below the picture as helping other BP members find their photo is hard unless you have visited their gallery everyday.
Thank you again. Just my own input. Keep up the good work.

May be they can place two buttons on Editors First Pick page:
"Random Reload"
and
"Page by Page Reload"

This way one can go back and search the entries one likes very quickly and he/she does not have to reload pages again and again in the random cycle.

I FINALLY saw the Saying Prayers in there. Carol T let me know, so I was looking. I just wish we could see all the pictures instead of repeating the same picture all the time and getting a different one here and there.
AS long as the temp internet folder isn't dunped, they download faster but it needs to be dumped then have to sit and wait all over again. DIAL UP SUCKS LOL We can't get DSL here yet, but there working on it. SOON I HOPE!

I have been looking through the Editor's Picks pages for several days now and I've left comments on quite a few photos. They were all uploaded on March 30 or 31. I know this feature just began in late March, but I don't understand why there are no picks after that.

I still think its the tail end of the March contest first round picks (runners up). All of these are contest entries. Remember though, there is runners up, then semi semi finalist, then semi finalist and finally the finalist. No matter what they are, kudos to BP for the changes.

Hello everyone. I agree with you Debra, Niki, ans Colleen. It was excoting, I also had some photo's in the editors picks, and was happy at least they were acknowleded in some way. I however would like to see more on a page.
As for the editors picks catogory, I asked a question yesterday as if those photo's were still in the running for the contest. Here is their response tonight and thought I would share it to all of you.

Thanks for contacting us via Live Help yesterday.

In regards to your question about the Editor's pick category, those images are simply highlights from the contest pool of images through the judging process. The image is still considered in the contest.

Thanks again for your interest.
Thank you,

Wow I go away for a few months come back and all sorts of changes have taken place, but I do like them. I enjoy the larger thumbnail pics, makes it easier to get a sense of the photo.

And now that I have found this thread I understand what editors picks is about, and I agree it is exciting to see some of my photos there. I like the idea of an EP icon by photos but at the same time, not sure we realy need more icons by the photos, just more clutter to look at. It would be nice to be able to look through those on seperate pages, rather than using the reload though, or like already mentioned have both options. I have hit the back button to go back and relook at a photo I saw before hitting reload, but it takes me back a web page and not to the previous loaded random images.

Love the changes - thanks Jim!
One more thing - is there any way - to not have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to be able to respond to something? Can we not have a 2nd respond button near the top??? Pretty please?

VERY GOOD IDEA! Or have the threads go the other way, with the NEW respose at the top, instead of the bottem.

It's been nearly a month now that the changes mentioned in this discussion have been made and I would say I have to agree with the others who would like more thumbnails on a page than the current twelve. What we used to see on one page now takes up 2.5 pages - that's two and a half as many pages to go through than before. I like the larger thumbnails, but I find that I'm not looking at as many images as before because there are so many pages to look through. For every 50 pages I looked at before, I now have to look at 125 pages to see the same number of pictures. Please add more thumbnails per page. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I will take them into consideration when I work with my dev team here. Expect to see more great things in the near future.

In the meantime, please email all your friends and invite them to the BetterPhoto party! For ease, you can use the "Tell a Friend" option at the bottom of this page.

Stay tuned for more fun improvements!

I like the Editor's Pick, I think it offers another level of confirmed progress to all the "yet to be" finalists and winners.
Suggestion, is there a way to group them by the days they are chosen for this list? It would make it more efficient for those looking at pictures, so not to have to review many pics they have already viewed.
Also, why are they duplicated sometimes every other screen?
Thanks
