Photography Question

Raw capture

I am just beginning to shoot raw. this is the comment from the guy who is evaluating for the work. "The highlights are a little over exposed but the image capture looks good. It is best to get all of the highlight detail possible at the capture."

My question is how do I make sure I get more highlights detail, would I underexpose the pic by a 1/2 stop? Each of the pics I took look a little overexposed to me but the histogram showed it was fine.

thanks for your help!
Jean
