Canon 430ex flash

Okay I just bought the canon speedlite 430 ex flash for my canon xti. you can use it as a slave lite....my question do you need to have more than one flash in order to use this feature...like one on the camera and then one off to the side for the slave....Sorry but I am just getting into adding a flash on my digital camera (using more than the pop up flash) and trying to learn as much as I can about it all. Any help is ssssoooooo greatly appreciated!!!

I'm not sure, but I think the pop-up flash on top of your cam triggers the 430EX, Erin. But, if so, you need to remember that the pop-up flash won't add useful light to your subject. Except for the odd obnoxious reflection. It's function is purely as a trigger.

Unless i'm confused about your question the answer is yes you need another flash. I don't know if the flash in your camera would set off the 430ex or not though. I have a 30d and the 580 ex and I used it with a 430 as a slave but I never tried using the flash that's on my camera body itself to see if it will set off my 580 good question.

I don't have an xti so I cannot answer your question but here is a link to the best info available about EOS Flash use.

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

It is a 3 part PDF doc. that is well worth printing out as a reference to how the EOS flash system operates and meter for ambient light. In most instances the flash acts as "fill" flash to try and balance with background ambient light.
Some people who are not familiar with how EOS flash operates are disappointed until they learn what is in this document.
I have the 580ex and can say that the 430ex is also a great unit.

No, on EOS cameras the built-in flash has no communication with remote EX speedlites. The EX speedligths do not slave with any flash burst, they use infrared communication. To use any of the 580EX, 550EX, 430EX, or 420EX as a wireless slave with E-TTL control you must have mounted on the camera a master unit to control it - either a 580EX, 550EX, MR-14EX, MT-24EX, or the ST-E3 controller.
