Looking to buy a digital camera I have taken quite a few pictures with my mother's Olympus Camedia D-560, but later this year I'm moving away and would like to get a digital SLR camera. I'm going to school to get a BFA in Photography and I want something that'll be well rounded.

So much for your statement. A statement devoid of any description or detail. Did you have a question too? If so, you had better make it more specific than your statement.

What brand of camera is best for someone who knows something about digital camera's but wants to know more. I need something that won't suck too much battery life, an overall good camera.

There are no 'bad' camera's. All of the major brands offer decent to (very) good camera models and decent to (very) good battery life. Want longer battery life? Get a camera that accomodates a 'power pack'/grip: looks like a motordrive of yesteryear, holds 2 batteries. And Hey Presto! you've got double the battery life!

There are not any bad DSLRs that I know of. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony all make very capable bodies and have good lens selections, even in their under $800 entry level DSLRs.
