Photography Question

Mounting/Framing

I am framing a large photo and have the matt to go with it. I need some advice on the best way to attach the photo to the matt. What I would like to do, is be able to replace the photo now and then with different photos (rather than having to buy frames every time). What is the best way to mount the photo so it could be easily removed and replaced. Thanks

Use two strands of removable tape at the top of the mount.

I am pretty new to this so excuse my ignorance. If I only use tape on the top, won't it show a little that toward the bottom it really isn't attached to the mat? Also, I am using mount and mat synominously- am I correct? I don't think there is a backboard in the back of the frame, just the back of the frame, so I don't think that would be giving it enough support into the mat?

I'm not an expert at this; however, I use "scrapbookers" tape to hold my images to the mat. The tape is acid free and meant to hold images to scrapbook paper. I use very small piece of tape on each corner of the image and try to only get the very corner. It seems to hold quite well and since it is acid free I would think that it would do no harm to the image. I have successfully removed images from mats after over a year in a frame using this tape. You can get the tape at any craft shop or Walmart.

I was under the impression that mounting is putting the picture on the mat. If there is no frame to push the picture up to the mat, you should tape like Irene said.

I do mount frame professionally. An artist friend, who owns a commercial framing shop once advised that you should use artist's framing tape to secure the print to the image. 3M, among others, makes this tape.

The tape should be placed along the top of the print. Since the tape is removable, it doesn't matter whether you use two strips, as Ariel suggests, or one length along the entire top.

There are arguments for and against using tape along the sides but, my artist friend indicated that's it's imperative that the print to be free at the bottom. This is to allow for expansion due to temperature changes.

You should place the overmatted image into the frmae and back it with another piece of mat board or foam core. You want a means to put a little pressure on the print along the edges that are not secured with tape.

If you purchased the mat you have, check to see whether the mat is a "mat set." If it is, you just need to slip the image between the window mat and the backing mat. If it's simply the window mat, go buy another piece of mat board or a piece of foam core.

If you're really intending to periodically replace the image, you should definitely replace the piece of glass with a piece of plexiglass. Lots of folks wil argue that plexiglass might have a very slight color cast. My experience with Lucite, DuPont's Trade Nemaed Product, has been excellent. But, the point is that the safety factor, as yuu replace a print, may be more important than the slight color cast.

Thanks, John, for the pro info! I started using the scrapebook tape because it is acid free. What you say about mounting only at the top makes absolute sense. I just never thought it out before.

Thanks for the responses and tips. I have a window mat, without a backboard but realized there is a piece of cardboard in the frame which will give enough support I believe. I have framed smaller prints and just used tape, but now see why the prints would tend to warp in the frame- I was using too much. Thanks/
