Filters and Alaskan Cruise a rookie asks the following...what filters should I travel with on a cruise to Alaska? I have a circular polarizer, but people have mentioned a neutral density and skylight filter...what would they be useful for? Any info greatly appreciated!!

A Neutral Density filter allows you to shoot with slower shutter speeds, or wider apertures, or both. You'll probably need a tripod, though. Which – on a ship's deck that trembles 24/7 – is not very useful... ND filters also filter UV-light. A Skylight filter enhances sky color very slightly, and filters UV-light. If you shoot digital, you don't need any more physical filters: you can add/subtract filter-like effects to your photos later, in post production. And much more precisely than you can when using physical filters. Lastly: using physical filters means schlepping them around! Any wildlife will have gone North loooong before you're ready to trip the shutter!

welcome cindy, take your circular polarizer, but since your not familar with the others, you may get worse photos if you took them with you. since you already have the c/p,i assume your familar with it and have used it before.like you said, you'd rather get it right than have to manipulate it later with some photo program. and schlepping ain't so bad.out by a nice body of water, cooler in tow, awaiting what you think will be a beautiful sunset.maybe you'll finally catch that flock of geese that occasionly flys over.the small herd of cattle with their new calves may even want to come over and check you out.or sit in front of one of these things, computer.maybe it's a job,or maybe it's an adventure. sam
