Nikon D70S Blurry Pics

I just bought my Nikon D70S. I love the pics that it takes, but I have a problem when I am shooting my kids doing sports activities, when they are moving they are blurry, but when standing still they are in focus. I have a figure skater, and hockey player, and a cheerleader. I have it on sport setting with the ISO set at 1600. When I use the auto they seem to come out ok, but cannot get the burst to work. And as you know with kids, I need the burst to get the right pic. Some one please help, my daughters last cheer comp. is this weekend and I would like to get some good tumbling pics. Thank for all your help.

If you're using auto focus, the burst may only work with the auto focus on one of the auto focus modes. It may only work with continuous auto focus, or it could be the opposite way and that it works only with single shot(or whatever nikon calls it) where the camera needs to lock in it's focus before it will snap several pictures in a row.
For blurriness, there may not be enough light for the type of lens you have even though you have the iso set to 1600. And sports mode will pick the fastest shutter that the lens' aperture have so you'll be able to use the fastest shutter speed that you can get with the light and lens.
