Lens On a Canon Rebel XTi - what is the one best Canon everyday all purpose lens to buy? And what would be the best Canon two (2) lens to purchase for the XTi?

"Best" is quite subjective. A "normal" prime (about 28mm to 35mm for the XTi) will have the fastest maximum aperture, and be sharper with less distortion than a zoom, but are not as convenient to use. f/2.8 zooms are preferred to those with varying maximum aperture (eg. f/3.5-5.6), but will not have as great a zoom range so are not as versatile. Image stabilization (IS, or Sigma's OS) is a nice feature, but not a necessity. Closer focusing ability ("macro") is preferred by some. ring-USM (or Sigma's HSM) is a preferred autofocus motor to traditional AF motors, but not a necessity. For a 2nd purchase after the all purpose lens, that depends on whether your interests are more wide angle (landscapes, interiors, etc.) or telephoto (sports, wildlife, etc.). My usual recommendation for the 2nd lens is not to get a lens, but to get a good accessory speedlight (such as the Canon 430EX) since the built-in flash is so limited. The "usual suspects" among normal primes are: Among 17/18-xx zooms: For economy, the "kit" lens that is packaged with the XTi (EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6) is not bad considering its low price. It can be a good choice for those who are starting out to learn with until they develop more specialized interests.

Many reviews suggest to spend the $80-100 for the kit lens on a better lens? Many have suggested putting the money to the EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS or the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. What would you suggest?? I thought about one lens you suggested - EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS as the prime and use my 35mm film 35-105 as my telephoto for a while. Your suggestions on a telephoto lens? Is it worth the spending a lot of money on a lens for a Rebel XTi? Thanks so much for the advice - much appreciated. John
