zoom lens for konica minolta

i need help buying a new zoom lens for my minolta ,last one was a promaster tele macro70-300 1:4-5.6 58mm dont have a lot of$$what should I look for in a good lense seems sigma tamaron and tokina are the most popular but its the f stops that are confusing seems they are either 2.8 or 4-5.6 mainly use lense for travel and surf photos so a faster lense for sports and somewhat wide angle for landscapes is it possible?

  welcome john,
a fast,f2.8,say 300mm,ain't cheap, and then if you want a fast all around telephoto say,f2.8 70-200mm,still gonna cost some bucks.the f2.8's are much larger, heavier and allow a faster shutter speed to stop action such as sports.
then the standard 70-300mm f4,which is at the 70mm setting, closes down to f5.6 at 300mm,which means you'll get a slower shutter speed and really won't stop action espically when the light starts to fade.
I purchased a 28mm f2.8 minolta off ebay in excellent condition for 70 bucks including shipping I use for landscapes.but you can compose landscapes with a 70-300,just a different perspective.
hth,sam
