Shooting a 6th Grade Dance ...

I'm getting ready to shoot a 6th grade dance at the end of April. Can someone please advise as to what backdrop would give less glare? I'm considering using black ... would it be better than white??

Both black AND white backgrounds create problems, Varnea. If some of your subjects wear black (at a dance? care to bet how many'll wear black...?), they'll "fuse" with a black background, creating big black indistinct "ink blots".
Of course, you could do something about that with good backlighting and hair lights, but who needs those kinds of problems and subtleties in a high-tension setting? Against a white background, your camera will probably not be able to handle the contrast either, leading to overexposed edges on your subjects. Or underexposed subjects. Also, you will need plenty of extra light on that background to actually GET it really white.
So you will avoid many problems by using neither a blacknor a white background - but something in between.
Have fun!

Varnea, you may want to scout out the area where the dance will be held. There may be a wall or background already available.

i recently did this for my son's school, wanting to stay low budget, I used one of those stringy things that are suposed to hang in the doorway, I used two of them actually, they were black, then hung some stars of different colors in front of the black...the wall behind it was kind of a beige....they turned out pretty good, even for those wearing black I guess because it wasn't solid....good luck! have fun!

I've done Dance pictures for about 7 years now for the local kids and the first time I did them I just sewed some sheets together and Tie Dyed them in a Blue. I have found Blue works best. You can see some on my website www.photographybydana.ca and get a better idea. Then I just duck taped them onto the wall. Good Luck!

also keep in mind this is a Spring dance, So some pastel draped materails( sheers) and /or even a buch of plants in the background.
we used a dressing screen once the wicker type with flowers and plants and fake ficus trees what a beautiful background it made!
Just some thoughts,

I did the same for a school in a project area as a fund raiser. I shot against a wall and the school added ballons and the theme for the dance. Be prepared for large groups of kids. We cut it off at eight. I had a parent take the name of the kids and their homeroom and ordered double prints of everything. If there were four kids I took two shots. (This was before digital)

sometimes a gray or cloudy brown make a good backdrop. also, lighting may be needed. if no lighting, you may end up with a small shadow around their heads.

Good luck on the dance! I work with Lifetouch and we use an Ivory linen backdrop. We have a gray/silver too. Might want to consider. Personally, I would pick up a couple of CHEAP white king size flats and paint them. See if the school has it in the dance budget to help out and then they can keep it for next year or so? Back lighting or some kind of lighting is a must as most dances are semi dark(ish).
