Photography Question

Robin L. Ford

How to layer 2 photos into 1

I have 2 photos that I would like to combine - I want a face in the background (like a ghost) with the other on top. Is that possible? And what type of program do I need? I've seen duel images done on baby pictures - like that the back ground with a ghost like appearance and then a solid one in front. But these are not digital images - these are snap shots that I would have to scan into my pc.

Put the "ghost" picture on top of the other, and lower it's opacity.

You can do it in Picasa 2, not to hard. Other programs like Photoshop are a little harder, but you follow Stephanie's suggestions. Helicon filter can merge the lighter pixels of two images pretty easily.

I have Picass2 but can't figure out how to do it. I've never attempted anything like this before and not sure at all where or how to begin.

Robin, I don't know which software you are using; I use Photoshop CS2, so I'll give you that method.

Open both images and also create a new image, same size or larger (transparent or white).

Under the WIndow menu, cascade the three images on screen. starting with the blank image as the background, use the Move tool to drag each image on top of the blank one at a time. You'll see when you do this, a new layer is formed for each image. Then you can open a layer mask and paint through the top image to the one below using a soft brush.

See http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/layermask/layermask.htm
for the complete instructions.

  In picasa 2:

Select the two photos you want to merge, so they are both in the photo trey.

Click the button at the bottom of the program that says "collage".

Under "type", select "multi exposure"

Click create.

You may want to adjust the lighting a bit afterwards.

Note that this is just an easy way to merge the pictures. Using Photoshop or other advanced programs, you can have more control and do a "professional" job.

  Robin,

Look at my gallery and see if that is what you are describing. I have done many of these in the past.
