Multi-Purpose Lens for Nikon D80 I just purchased a Nikon D80 (used to shoot with Nikon N64) had several lenses for SLR. What is a good multipurpose lens for my DSLR (Nikon D80)? I like to take sports pictures of my sons, (Basketball/Soccer inside and Football/Baseball inside) and also family pictures. If I could only buy one lens what should it be?

well kraig, you wish to move ahead without understanding your crop factor.(typo n65) your 60mm f2.8 is now a 90mm f2.8. put your ears on and listen to the skinney. sam

Kraig, I have a D80 and shoot in many of the same situations you describe. I went with a Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3. It is much slower than that described by Sam but for me it the wide angle is sufficient for family get-togethers and the 200mm is usually adequate for the kids on the field. Good luck. Dave

Kraig - I bought a D80 last Christmas. I chose the 24-120 VR lens (nikkor). I have been very pleased with the light. I was able to even figure out the magic of photographing Christmas light decorations on the outside of a house without getting the glow of slow shutter. That is just my experience. There are many good options. I have just started on this web site. You can look through my gallery - only 30 pics so far. They were all taken with this camera and lens.

Kraig, the Nikkor 18-200 VR is a very versatile lens. It is small and light and produces excellent pictures with minimal distortion. The advantage over the Tamron is the vibration reduction which allows you to handhold up to 3 stops slower. Of course with both the Nikkor and Tamron the minimum aperture of 3.5 is not great for freezing action in lower light condsitions. Bill
