Photography Question

Cindi Kapica

Exhibiting for the first time

I may have secured a spot in a small local coffee shop to exhibit for a month. Here is the problem....I have NEVER exhibited before. I have two specific questions:

1. Should I frame and mat all my pics first?
2. What is the preferred size for exhibiting in this way?

I don't want to look like a complete amateur by asking the coffee shop owner...but I guess I AM a complete amateur! Any help would be so appreciated.

  Just a suggestion but...
Its a Coffee Shop, not an Art Gallery.I would ask the owner.
Also, what does the other exhibited work look like?
If you are you the first to exhibit,
then its your call.

Good Luck

Willie

Good point. I knew I was overthinking it.

Hi Cindi, congratulations on being asked to exhibit your photos. I show in three galleries along the Mississippi gulf coast and , for the most part, have images matted and bagged displayed in racks. I mat and frame a few for the galleries.

I also show in a restaurant and will begin in a new coffee house in about a week. For the restaurant and coffee house, it would be more appropriate to mat and frame. These images are on exibit--to me that means hung, matted and framed. I use the same setup for all framed images. White archival matting and satin black metal frames. This gives a consistant look to all my pieces and highlights the art rather that fancy framing. This costs me less than custom framing, so I can sell for less. Some customers may very well prefer unframed pieces so they can have them custom framed--talk to the shop owner and make arrangements to bring in an unmatted, unframed image if a customer asks for it (price accordingly).

Hope this helps. Good luck.

John

  Hi

If you get an opportunity to show off you work, you should do all you can to make the best show you can. I think it is all about perception and if you go in there and deliver professional work, you will attract people who do business that way. Never let an opportunity pass you by, you may regret it later.

Did you ask how much wall space you can use?
One wall, smaller pictures. Two walls, bigger pictures.

To direct observers' view and cut out as much distraction as possible I try to keep the presentation clean and simple: no frames, and standardized sizes (11x8" images on 16x12" mattes, if possible).
