Photography Question

Shelly Davis

resolution pixels/inch

I was wondering if any could help answer this question....when I shoot in JPEG (fine/large) my files are automatically 300 pixels/inch, but when I shoot in Raw (NEF) they are in 240 pixels/inch. By the way I use a Nikon D70s and D80. Also, should I change the raw files to 300 ppi or leave them at 240 ppi. Any help would be great. Thanks!

240 ppi is a standard printing input for many, but not all, consumer inkjet printers. Go to Image/Image Size in PS (or, I suppose, in Elements), UNcheck Resample, check Constrain Proportions and change the resolution to 300. The file size, in MB, will stay the same, because you are not throwing out or adding any pixels. The image dimensions, however, will get smaller. Some printers print a little better at an input of 300, some even print best at 350 input.

Since its so easy and non-destructive to change the res in this way, I just archive mine at 300 ppi, whether they start out at 72 ppi from my digicam, or 2400 ppi from my film scanner.
