Upgrading Canon camera

I am looking to upgrade from my Canon Digital Rebel, obviously staying with Canon due to the expense of buying new lenses. Any suggestions on which way I should go? I would prefer to stay under $1500 for body only, if possible, and am not opposed to buying on Ebay or similar. I have loved having the Rebel, but on my last trip (ended yesterday), I noticed a lot of hesitation, for lack of a better word, while focusing, and am thinking that perhaps taking 2000+ shots in 2 weeks might have been too much for it, which could explain why I had the hesitation... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Margaret

Both the Digital Rebel XTi and 30D have much improved AF over the original Digital Rebel. However, AF is not something that would wear out or suffer from heavy use. Before plunking $$$ on a new camera, you might check to see if the AF sensors in your current camera are dirty. Take off the lens and look into the body, the AF sensors are at the bottom, below the mirror. Blow out any lint/dust that may be in those little holes with a blower or blower/brush. Do not blow with your breath, or attempt to clean with any fluid or cloths.

Thanks, Jon. I did have the sensors factory cleaned just a week before leaving on the trip (a fabulous two weeks in Hawaii), and I never changed lenses while the camera was on, so I don't know if that was it, although I will certainly bring the camera into my local shop and have them take a look at it. It also literally whined at times - and I don't know what THAT means.... maybe just crying from overuse.

I can't think of anything in the camera that would make a "whining" noise. The 1st generation Digital Rebels are more subject to mirror/shutter failures. Still, replacment is ~$200-250, much less than buying new. Perhaps it's your lens(es) that are giving you grief?

I hope not! One is a brand new (bought for this trip) Tokina 80-400 and the other that I brought was a Tokina 12-24. I've been very happy with both so far, in terms of clarity and sharpness and quickness (although less so on the 80-400), so I would hate to have to replace either one.

  Still thinking...
Did you use the built-in flash? Maybe more than usual? It'll make a "whine" sound as the capacitor recharges, and if you were taking a lot of flash shots, or if your battery is old, it'll take longer for it to cycle. I'm not positive, but I think in most modes the camera will not allow the shutter to release until the flash is charged.

If so ==> new battery or maybe an accessory flash is in order. The new XTi is kind of notorious for the built-in flash to be slow cycling.

If not... still thinking. ;-)
