While my wife and I lounged in our living room on New Year's day, the setting sun streamed through our window in one of those perfect ways we only seem to hear about. Our dog, Dexter, happened to be sitting right in the wash of light. I sprang up, grabbed my camera, and began shooting before I lost the opportunity. In just a few minutes, the light was gone but I had my shots.

I hear the gentle rattle of a cocktail shaker. I hear the rustle of paper and foil as chocolate is unwrapped. That can only mean one thing: it's time for Cocktails & Chocolate!

Welcome to the monthly thread that gives us all an opportunity to show off, brag, revel, and hope! It's time to share either that one photo you really, really think is going to garner a medal or that one you really, really WISH would bring home a finalist's nod.

I had a difficult time this month trying to decide which one I wanted to post, but I went with a photo of our dog, Dexter. I think this photo falls more in the "wish" column than the "garner" column, but I like it none-the-less.

I look forward to seeing everyone's photos, and to saying, "congratulations!" to all the finalists.

Now let the fun begin....

Two months after I got my camera, I shot my "Light Lives Here" image. It made Finalist
but I've wanted to reshoot it after a year's learning; looking back on it now,
I think it is too bright & yellow, with some of the glorious stained glass color blown out.

So this is my reshoot 14 months later, inspired by that image but with significant changes; while shot in the same aisle
and in similar early morning light, I used a much lower POV (8" off the floor) capturing more of the
reflections in the polished marble. I used a ND filter this time, making it a 7-second exposure (vs. 1 second)
A darker overall result, but I like the color saturation much better.
This comp has no zoom (vs. 3x zoom before) giving greater length to the aisle, and it pulls Woodrow Wilson's tomb
(barely visible before) prominently into frame, at right.

You're talking my language, with cocktail shakers! 17 of them sit in a collection on my dining room wall! ;) Here's my January Favorite, and, one of my now, all-time favorites!!
