Photography Question

Lori L. OHara

Need a portrait lens for the Canon 20D

I'm looking for good strong suggestions on a good lens for taking kids portraits. I like some zoom on it. I don't like to use a tripod as most of my portraits are of kids in their environment playing, etc. I'm a huge fan of really tight shots.

  Hi Lori,

I would suggest the Canon 28-135 image stabilizer lens, about 450$..

Thanks John. Have you done any portraits with this lens?

Not a zoom, but I used just the 50mm 1.4 lens for many months, and it was great for kids portraits indoors and out. Cost about $350 I think.

I agree with Jane M. on the 50MM 1.4. Anyone doing portraits has this lens...OK maybe they've upgraded to the 50MM 1.2 by now but they've got one or the other. I also love my Canon 24-70 2.8L and with yours a 17-40L should be in the bag.

thanks so much...I have the 50MM 1.4. What do you think about the 24-70mm 2.8L vs the 24-105mm f.4L?

  Hi

90% of my photos are of kids, usually just having fun at a playground, the photos are for the parents to purchase. I only use a Canon 70-200 f2.8L. You mentioned you like tight photos, I presume you mean close ups? I get good close ups of allot of natural unposed shots with this lens because it allows me to do so without them even noticing that I am there. I have never needed wider angle for these kind of photos. I also carry a 50mm prime lens like suggested above but hardly use it.

As with the choice between 24-70mm 2.8L vs the 24-105mm f.4L, I will always go for the wider 2.8 aperture, for me 2.8 is the slowest I will buy.

If you're doing anything like Marius then the 70-200 2.8IS is a MUST HAVE. Of course it's twice as expensive at your camera but if will be the best lens you could have and the photos are spot on. I use it on all of my shoots.
