Photography Question

Timestamp

I just recently purchased a Canon Powershot S3 IS and need some basic help. I want to have the date and time stamped on the pictures that I take and can't figure out how to set it. Can someone please tell me how to do it?

Thanks!

Personally, I would strongly discourage this, as it imo ruins all pictures you take. A much better option is to use the Metadata. You can right-click(Option-Click on Mac), and click on properties/Get info. It should tell you the time and date there.

Agree with Brendan: it destroys your pictures.

But I'm sure the S3 can be set somewhere in its menus to imprint a disfiguring date/time stamp on your pictures. Check the manual.

Looking at the image file's EXIF data - already in the file - is a more elegant solution. And makes for much prettier pictures. Many photo editing applications can make the EXIF data visible. Or there are one-trick-pony apps like EXIF readers.

To add date/time stamps to pictures after they were taken you can try an app like TimeToPhoto (http://avpsoft.com/products/timetophoto/).

I have to agree with Brendan & W.S.
Most people here that have used the Date stamp end up regretting it. It really takes away from the image.

  Laura,

if you're on a Mac, you're in luck:

PhotoInfoEditor

Do you want to edit meta-data (latitude and longitude, location, description, and notes) of photo (JPEG/RAW/Tiff) files? Do you wish to change all the names of your photo files at once? If you do then PhotoInfoEditor from MMISoftware may be the answer.

PhotoInfoEditor is an easy to use meta-data editor for photo files. The program is freeware.

With PhotoInfoEditor you can add location and summary details to a JPEG, RAW or Tiff photo files. Location information consists of latitude and longitude data, as well as town, area/region, and country. This can be added manually (just type it in) or 'automatically' by placing a pointer on a map to get the latitude and longitude data, and then allowing the program to add town, area/region, and country information. This process can also be described as 'geocoding' a picture/photo.

Summary information can be added by typing it in!

PhotoInfoEditor also allows meta-data to be edited in single or multiple photo files at once.

Download it here:

Have fun!

And if you're a Windows user, you can download the Microsoft Photo Info Tool, which also allows easy Metadata editing.
