Photography Question

Stephanie M. Stevens

digital focal lengths

I'm confused about the differences between digital and film lenses regarding focal lengths. I know that 18mm with a small sensor is not quite the same as 18mm on a full-frame sensor/film, but I can't wrap my head around the difference well enough to make it mean anything practical. Specifically, I would like to try fisheye-type photography, I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens, so what does that mean when you compare it to an EF lens of similar focal length, and what would be a wide angle lens for the smaller sensor? Thank you.

  this is so misunderstood.

think of your lens with you 35mm full frame. then, imagine that you put a small piece of black tape around the edge of the lens, which blocked your view at the far outside, but you could still see through it, just not as much. That's all that is going on. The sensor in you Rebel is smaller than the "sensor" in your full frame camera, and therefore you are simply seeing less of the available lens space.

Does it matter? Not at all.

But, you will hear people say things like, an 50mm shoots like a 35. BS. It shoots like a cropped 50mm. Perspective is EXACTLY the same.

HTH,
Jerry
