Photography Question

Rob & Stacy Sherrill

Software OTHER than Photoshop

Has anyone out there tried NOVA Development's PhotoImpact PRO v.11 or Publisher Pro 2.0?? I have played around with both and they seem to be OK. Any comments? Anyone?

I had done a little bit of research on them in the past but couldn't find that much information. Have you used it?

Are you asking about all programs other than Photoshop or just this one?

Actually Derek, check out this Wikipedia link on programs like Photoshop and PhotoImpact. You'll see that there are quiet a few competent programs for several times less than CS2, and you'll notice some programs in Photoshop's price range which don't look all that great.

And another program which can match photoshop and it's free is the Gimp.

Well, GIMP is free and good, but it can't exactly match Photoshop. For example, you need plugins to fix noise, and you can't stack photos. GIMP also has GIMPShop which looks like Photoshop, you know.

Ai, but the noise reduction is already built into gimp. Gimpshop is nothing more then Gimp made to look like photoshop.

I didn't know that GIMP can remove noise! I'll have to change that Wikipedia comparison...

So on the note of different programs, I'd like to mention Helicon Filter. I highly recommend it. Fully functioned and not too expensive.

Hmm Wikipedia seems to have some other issues with gimp hah. You can do lens corrections in Gimp, and I can access CMYK aswell. What did you mean by stack photos? (layers?)

Are you sure that you can do lens correction without plugins? Because there is also a plugin support column. Anyhow, you are free to edit.

By stacking photos, I don't mean layers. I mean taking two pictures and combining elements from them. For example, in order to create an HDR, in order to create a multi-exposure, etc.

Ah yes, can't do true HDr without plugins, actualy I don't believe you can at all cause it's only a 8bit system. But yes you can do lense corrections with a perspective tool. It is not a plugin.
