Photography Question

Who Me?

Along came a spider

I usualy won't buy any products without hearing a great deal about how good they are, but I was sort of forced into a good thing. I've never calibrated my monitor and I thought my colors were fine. Well, I had to use my friends computer because mine crashed (yes it was a PC). When I got my prints made I thought maybe the lab had gotten a new machine because my colors were better than ever. They told me nothing had changed. My friend calibrates with the SpiderPro2 and since then I have purchased it. It is definitely worth the $250.

How does this work? Can it be used on a lap top? I know this is probably a dumb question but if you then copy the photos to CD are they still in better color? What happens when you upload them to someplace like MPIX? Thanks for your help.

Who Me?
When using my old monitor what I thought were true colors were not. Then when I used a properly calibrated monitor my colors were what they are supposed to be. The spider hangs down in the middle of the screen and test all your colors and corrects them.

I know this is probably a dumb question but if you then copy the photos to CD are they still in better color?

Yes, once they are recorded as correct they will stay that way no matter how you send them. Using a uncalibrated computer will not make a difference.

  Hi Linda,
The Spyder2 is a monitor calibrating software/hardware that you use to calibrate and set up a profile to achieve better color for your monitor. You start the software and it guides you along and then in a dark room you will place the spyder over your monitor as it brings up different colors to calibrate and apply those settings in your profile. Personally, my laptop has the reflective screen that can look off if you even at a slight viewing angle, so I use a 19" monitor that I plug into my laptop for my photo editing. I then have 2 monitors and I use my laptop for thumbnails (like Adobe Bridge) and then use the 19" for Photoshop and making any adjustments. My photos look & print the same when I have Spyder2 loaded and I did trouble with varying colors before using it.

So does this mean all those pictures in your gallery in British Columbia need to be redone?

For me, the single most important item in my photo pack (beside the camera and lenses) is my tripod. In the digital “lab” the single most important item is the Spyder Pro. Before using it I thought the colors were true and wondered why they did not look right once printed. Now I calibrate my monitor about twice a month and my prints look so much better. Once you get the feel of the thing it is very easy and quick.
