Photography Question

Pam Chewning

What is your definition of a photography concept

My daughter is a senior in college majoring in photography. She now has to have an exit show and is having a difficult time with her theme. Her professor says all her ideas are technics, not concepts. Do you have any suggestions and or examples. Thanks.

What is she doing, using something like subject distance or focal length to do her pictures? Maybe an example would help her come up with her own. Take the growing point of view among girls pertaining to what they consider as a viable future. A fast increasing number of girls have aspirations of being a celebrity as a viable future. Shifting from lawyer, teacher, etc... to being a celebrity.
A concept would be to show how celebrity obsession, growth of reality tv, the same old fashion mag influence plays on how girls see themselves and see how the world is to them.
A technique would be wide angle candids to juxtapose them with their environment(bedroom with mag photos taped to the wall).Or to combine text with photos, something like quotes from a diary or some phrase they always say.

  Hi Mom,

Have her go to a large book store, go with her and take a good long look at the coffee table books. Most will cover just one theme like “baby animals” – “doors” – “antiques” – “air craft” – “cars”- “jewelry” - “milk cows” – “fireworks” – “glass” – “nurses” – “plows” – “rugs” –caskets” – “headstones” you know, the things we encounter in our lives. Consider a theme covering some aspect of a profession like the aprons and the shoes or how they dress for work. Or go to the museum pick a category and make a brochure on that subject like insects or snakes or rail cars or radio sets of the past. Get my drift?
