Studio wall color

I am building a 24*30 portrait studio and am confused on what color to paint the walls. The ceiling will be white and I will use the actual wall and windows for some photos, but backdrops for most. Should I use white or gray for best light control?

Thanks!

  Hi Kimberly,
Grey will give you more control. White will give you more bounce and the room will look larger. My studio has white walls. I have black seamless paper hanging from the ceiling that I can pull down if I am getting too much bounce. Thanks, John Siskin

  Hi Kimberly,

Consider that backgrounds when unlighted record as black and when over-lighted record as blown-out white. What I am saying is, in a well designed studio, you can exercise careful control over the light spilling on the walls. These adjustments allow you to render the background any shade you desire from black thru white.

If I were designing a studio, the walls would be painted flat white. If you are compelled to paint them otherwise, make them a light-light gray.

This decision is not too serious. A can of paint and a roller allows you to change your mind.

Luck to you,

Alan Marcus

You sure it's all of them?

  Hello Kimberly,

24'x30' is certainly a great start; but I noticed you left out an equally important dimension..Height.

I have found 10 feet to be a minimum; especially if you plan on using large softboxes.

Concerning color, I too use white with black pull downs when necessary.

Pete

Ah, this is one of those 'everyone has an opinion' questions!
I have one wall painted a very, very, very pale pink...it's so light you can't tell. In the photos, it's white.
Another wall is a cream white, with a yellow base. It's the wall I use most. I do little kids and newborns. Lots of natural lighting. It may not be conventional, but it works for me.
