  Hi Nancy,

Unless you plan on investing in a steam engine for your car too, I wouldn't invest in a film camera anymore.

I like the response of W.S.... I too feel that way Nancy. And as what to focus on first would be to get used to your camera and just shoot, shoot, shoot. By doing that, you will see a patteren emerge and notice you have a subject or catagory you shoot the most. For instance, you will take shot after shot but have more of say flowers, landscape, people, pets... and with this focus on that one thing you shoot the most of and make that your focus.. but more importantly... enjoy the world of Digital Photography... Happy shooting!

  Hi Nancy,

Welcome to BP...you'll love it here! My personal preference for cameras is digital, however your question is a loaded question as many people have their preferences. There have been some pretty heated discussions at this site about the same topic.

As for what you focus on first. Yes, definetly learn the camera and it's settings, but make sure you learn the importance of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. They all play hand in hand with one another if you are shooting in manual. I would highly suggest that you learn to shoot that way over the other settings that may be on your camera (like a portrait setting, a macro setting or a landscape setting...you have much more control in manual). Also definetly learn the importance of light. You mentioned buying John Hedgcoe's book, but one of the first books that I bought was Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Gives you everything you would need...with a great deal of humor and warmth.

Good luck!
Margie

  Hi Nancy, welcome to BP!

When I was starting out, I took a community education class that really taught me some SIMPLE things that helped so much- Check out this link, it gives the basic 10 tips that I learned in that class. They might sound TOO basic, but you'd be surprised how much these simple things can impact your photos!

How do you like the A530? I just ordered the SD600 powershot as a "take with me everywhere" camera instead of my DSLR.

  Denyse,
This is an annoying quirk that happens when a person deletes their BP account (or BP deletes it). Their posts stay on the message board, and the avatar from the previous post is copied to the orphan post. I'm sure it's just an unintentional programming thing.

The rude comments, of course, are the intentional work of our resident trouble-maker.

Maybe the site web-techs can run a script to delete orphan posts. That would be helpful.

No, I mean you. Whatever location you claim is irrelevant.

Hi Chris! Yeah it's weird b/c the comment still shows in the thread, but when you come here to type a new message it doesn't show. Actually this thread seems all goofed up now b/c YOUR comments aren't showing back here either.

Dr evil needs to get a day job!

  Denyse,
I think the webmaster may be deleting some of the annoying posts. There was a post from the name-changer's Suzzy character in between my two posts, but now it is gone.

Not that it will be missed, of course! ;-)

Excellent, I saw a name-changer post on another thread & it's removed now too. BP is the best.

Not missed in the slightest :)

Hello Nancy! I too am a new very beginner picture taker (I won't even use the title photographer for myself.) Although I do aspire to some degree of greatness. I joined this site for inspiration, information and constructive criticism just yesterday.

Have you posted a gallery yet? I couldn't find one if you have. Try posting a few photos and adding them to discussions for feedback. I have posted about 8 and am anxiously awaiting word.

Good Luck fellow newcomer!
