Rain at a wedding shoot?

Any wedding photographers out there with some advice? I've got about 5 weddings lined up between now and March -problem is we start having heavy thunder showers at this time of year, about 1630/1700 - with sun setting about 1930, and getting earlier towards 1830. What suggestions if its pouring down during or straight after the service? We have a lot of wedding venues here, but.... they all rely on beautiful gardens, and there's only so much you can shoot in the little chapels!! I don't have a studio where I can taken them later - I'd have to hire one. Or do I offer to re-shoot at my convenience another time (they just have to get dressed up, do the hair etc...) and do I charge for it. The venues are all about 40kms away.... Or do you just take lots of indoor shots, and PS them - BW / Sepia / Crop / Selective Colour?? I've taken some preliminary 'stock' shots of the gardens, so could do some collages with that as a backdrop.....
Thanks

  robyn,

i don't do anything like what you mentioned. I just find an alternative inside, or use the rain. give them an umbrella and let them go out in it, if they want to. or, you go out in it, and shoot with them under something. use the rain, it's beautiful. don't hide it. the tragic mistake wedding photographers make is trying to hide the truth. exhibit and accentuate it, and your couples will love you.

i forgot to mention something...make sure it's their decision. in other words, ask them if they wouldn't mind going out into the rain, or playing with it, somehow. if they don't want to, you tell them the only alternative is inside photos. let them make that decision, not you. push them to do cool things. if they want to use the inside, maybe you can find a window or something. remember, rain at a wedding is good luck. use that.

I did a wedding here in Virginia on Dec 30th....the couple knows what a gamble it was have a wedding on that date...it could snow. I would rather capture the day as it is...and when I have had rain, we just shoot indoors. I have had one couple that went out in the rain VERY BRIEFLY and we shot a photo with the umbrellas just so they would remember it was raining. Most couples want to capture the day of the wedding. If the reception is in a nice place, use that and take lots of indoor shots. Beautiful wedding photos are not just for outdoors. Go with the flow and maybe this gives you a big challange.
Good luck and maybe it won't rain after all!

I am not a wedding photographer, but I was supposed to have an outside wedding on the beach. It was the end of May at the Jersey Shore. Instead, that day we had what we call a Nor'easter! 40 mph wind and driving rain all day. Towards the end of the day with the last available light, my photographer took us out side and the grey sky made the photos very dramatic. In fact, I chose one of them for my 16x20 portrait!

Thanks Jerry Debbie & Mary Ann - you're all right, I'll make sure I've got a nice big brolly for just in case, and with the venue's that are coming up, we could get some lovely shots. But as you say, I'll suggest it, and its up to them as to how 'wet' they want to get! I guess if she's worried about her shoes, he can carry them, and she can show a substantial amount of ankle.... :) could be really nice :)
Thanks

I'm sure you'll do great, Robyn.
My very FIRST wedding that I shot was scheduled to be an outdoor ceremony. I was so excited with all the photo opportunities. The weather had other plans. On the day of the wedding it came a huge thunderstorm. My flash unit that I'd borrowed wouldn't work. We had power outages and the lights (like gym lights) had to be reset every time the power went out delaying all the shooting that could be done. I was horrified!
I worked hard to find creative spots and poses inside. I used Photoshop to add some special touches (like selective coloring) to make things a little more fancy despite the circumstances. The couple seemed very pleased with the results.
However, I didn't get the shot I really wanted (since the bride and groom didn't leave until after all the guests--long story). But the shot I really wanted was them in the rain kissing under a big umbrella. Maybe you'll get the opportunity to get the one I missed! :)

Thanks Sherry - yours sounds like a total nightmare. I guess I just get myself knotted before a wedding, but things generally run smoothly on the day! Thanks all for the idea's and input!

I think you could use the rain and make it a cool effect. I aiming to do a shoot with the rain lit up and the drop kinda glowing. Its tough in the OC to get Rain.
