Photography Question

Desiree C. Preckwinkle

What is this piece called?

I need this piece to mount my reflector umbrella to a light stand. Does anybody know what it is called? A bracket of some sort? Any idea.
Thanks,
Desiree

It's called...you're probably not going to believe this Desiree..."a stand adapter". Honest !!! There are different kinds, but generally, if all you need is just the adapter to hold the umbrella, without the light, to the stand...
Here's two for you to look at. Both of them will also accept a light head. Most umbrella shafts are a standard diameter so they should all fit each of the following adapters.

That one is for a Chimera, you can get cheaper but cheap is a bad idea. If it comes loose or something snaps from the weight of a head, there goes your lamphead AND umbrella.

Another good one is the Photoflex model which has a shoe adapter that will take an umbrella AND a shoe-mounted flash like a Nikon SB XYZ model and depending how you rig it, a radio slave to trip the flash.

I have one of these Photoflex adapter guys and use it alot on locations for fast, smaller, lighting set-ups with a small portable stand.

Okie dokie?
Take it light.

Sorry, I was a bit distracted when I wrote that reply. The adapter I mentioned is FROM not for Chimera. And both will accept either just an umbrella or will take a standard stud, like from Impact or Manfrotto in order to insert it in the top section to attach a lamphead. ;>)

Thanks, those are both just what I am looking for. I saw a few that would work on the website. I should have known it was called a stand adaptor. =) Thanks for the reply.

Mark, sorry to write again, but curious if I got this piece you mentioned :

Would this work with my Nikon SB600 flash? And now one more question I am confused... I am looking at lightstands, and how do I know if I need one with a 3/8 in stud top or 5/8 in stud top? I want to buy the right one? Thanks so much for all your time.

Greetings D. There are light stand adapters that will and won't accept shoe mount flash units. The Photoflex has a shoe that will. BUT be careful of immitations that aren't as solidly built. In my view, it ain't worth saving a couple of books for a piece of gear that may take a dump and break damaging what it's supporting, ya know?

AND remember too that when you're using a separate stand with a stand adapter that has accepts a shoe-mount strobe, the shoe on the adapter isn't a hot shoe and isn't linked to your camera. So for that, as I said earlier, I use a Pocket Wizards Plus transmitter and receiver set-up. The transmitter is on my Leica M-6 hot shoe and while my strobe sit on the Photoflex hot shoe stand adapter, the strobe is triggered by the Wizard receiver that hangs on a cord on the stand and attaches to the strobe with a cord that has a mini-phono plug on one end (fits the Pocket Wiz) and a PC plug that inserts into the flash on the other.

This rig, for the shoe mount flash, should work fine with your SB600. AND it comes with two studs, the 5/8 AND the 3/8 which should work with anything you've got.

For stands, if you need one and want a good one that's really portable and solid enough for holding a portable shoe-mount strobe, take a look at the Dyna Lite DYLS7 6'-5" black stand. Folds up to about 19", fits OK in my Domke or Tenba Bags. :>) If working outdoors with an umbrella or softbox, you ought to have some way to hold the stand down if the wind starts blowing.

Okie dokie? ;>))
Take it light.

Got it. The Dyna Lite is by far the smallest light stand at a good price. I was looking over and found this.
750 Westcott Photo Basics 7.5' Free Sliding Black Light Stand
What piece do I need to attach this type of reflector? Will it fit on any standard light stand? Thanks once again for all your help.

  Greetings Mark,
Now that I have my light stand and stand adaptor, I have looked into the Pocket Wizards Plus transmitter and receiver and it appears it has been discontinued. Any idea of this? Can you please recommend something that is comparable? Thanks so much.
Desiree

  Hi Desiree,
There are radio slaves available on Ebay starting at about $30.00. I have one and it works about as well as a wired sync. You might want to check it out. Much more reasonable than Pocket Wizard. Tesla could have built one of these things more than a hundred years ago.
Thanks,
John Siskin
