How to shoot ice hockey

I was shooting an ice hockey game using Nikon D200. I had it on P (auto aperture), ISO 1600, usining a zoom. Lighting was not great. Oix came out "OK" but were dark abd a tad blurry. I was shooting through the glass also. Any tips? It was also auto focus using the multiple frame setting. I real curious if I should use the manual aperature and what setting, and if I shoiuld play with white background or keep it RAW...PDS...Im a total newbie, as you may guess.

RAW is best. Setting a custom WB for the actual lighting will help get JPG color right. The large expanse of white ice (and usually white boards) tends to fool the meter into underexposure. Try setting maybe +1 stop of exposure compensation. Use A (aperture priority) set for the lens's maximum aperture will keep shutter speeds as high as possible.
