If you've got a homeowners or renters policy, check with your agent to see if your camera gear is covered for non-professional use. Some car insurance comprehensive policies cover things like theft or damage to photo equipment but not if it's "professional equipment" (used for earning a living).

If you're doing this professionally, you always need equipment insurance against loss, theft, breakage. Some of the professional associations like ASMP.org, National Press Photographers, etc., offer members discount equipment insurance from reputable outfits.

If you're doing studio work at all, you probably need premise liability coverage along with fire, theft, etc.
