Photography Question

Danielle E. Rutter

Insurance

Okay I know there are a few experts on this lingering about... so I need your help.

Insurance! I don't really know what kind I need. I'm just starting up my business and I'm doing a marketing plan right now that will hopefully get me some business with people I'm not friends with already. :P But because I'm an on-location photographer, I know I need insurance to protect me in case somebody/something gets hurt. The thing is that I haven't yet officially declared my business with the state and don't plan on doing so until March (for other reasons). Does this effect my ability to get insurance? And if I can still get it... where do I begin?

Thanks in advance!

  Howdy Danielle.
Here's a link to a nearly identical question I answered for someone else this morning.

Insurance agents are usually interested more in commissions than whether you're conducting business without being properly registered with the state, etc. But ask an agent whether payment of a claim is contingent on registration.

Also, you'll do much better taking advantage of a professional organization's insurance plan than finding one on your own. WPPA I guess may be good for you, or PPofA. I get my insurance through National Press Photographers and ASMP.org, They're great, reasonably priced, and quite efficient at processing bond applications when I need permits to be doing commercial shoots on location.

Take it light but make sure it's insured first. .

The deal with the photo organizations is usually good. But I have to recommend State Farm. I was with them for about 3 months in 2004 when my studio was broken into. Between 10,000 and 20,000 dollar loss. They took GREAT care of me. REALLY GREAT. I can’t imagine a more helpful organization. So you might give State Farm a call. Do it soon. Insurance is a great tranquilizer. Thanks, John
