Photography Question

Macro tools

I have seen a small device that is used to hold items like flower stems when photographing a flower in macro. I can't seem to find one and don't even know what it is called. Any body out there ever seen such a thing?

Also, any recommendation on a good ground pod that can hold a D200 and a 105 lens?

Phyllis, I believe the item you are referring to is the Plamp by Wimberly products - you can google "plamp" to see if that's right. I use mine on occassion and it's really quite handy.

As for a short tripod, I carry around a Gitzo 1228 with a Linhof head (though nowdays I'd probably get an ultratech head instead) but I know Really Right Stuff has a (fairly expensive) ground tripod that is probably built like a tank. You can check it out at www.reallyrightstuff.com.

You can make your own for practically nothing:

*Plastic drinking straws and a chunk of styrofoam...(the flower stem goes inside the straw.)

*A piece of heavy coat hanger wire with a small alligator clip on one end...(the other end goes into the ground).

*A few twist-ties and a small branch found at the scene...(less versatile but works in a pinch).
