Photography Question

Becky Hermanson

Lack of sharpness in uploaded pics

I uploaded this pic and the sharpness and detail is gone that was there. I saved it as a jpg, 750x500 as a "high Quality" jpg. It started out as a CR2 file converted to tiff, first 16 bit then 8 bit so I could work on it in PSE 5. How can I keep the sharpness in the image when I upload it?

Guess nobody wants to help us here. I asked a similar question days ago and no responses. I'm thinking of switching to pbase.com

I hear they don't have this issue.

Good luck.

The very same thing happens to me with sharpness issues here at BetterPhoto, no matter if I size the image at roughly 500 on one size or not. (That's an odd size, isn't it? Most places take them at 600 X 800 or 480 X 640). The exact same photo will look perfectly sharp at PhotoShowdown, for example, but not at all sharp here.
I have also been getting weird pink blotches down the right side of my photos...which also ONLY happens here at BetterPhoto! I submit the same photos to about 10 other sites, and no problems there.
What gives?
I searched for the answer here in Q&A, but can't find it. Thanks!

There Is A Bunch Of Info On The Site Concerning Sharpness On BP You Can Use The Search Box To Find It.
Here Is The Link:
http://www.betterphoto.com/searchResults.php?szTerm=sharpness+on+bp&schMod=QnA&limit2=all

Re size Your Image To 480 Pixels On The Short Side This Will Allow For The Border That BP Uses On All Images, And Will Definitely Make Them Sharper, I Upload Tiff's. If Your Uploading To The Contest And Are Disappointed With The Outcome Of The Image Test Drive The Image To Your Gallery First, Before Entering Into The Contest Just To See How Its Going To Appear If It Don't Suit You Delete The Image And Make The Necessary Changes And Test Drive It Again, Until You Have It Correct, Soon You Will Learn The Little Quirks And How You Need To Compensate For It On A Given Image;-) Hope That Makes Sense To You...

Terry, you are the reason I will stay here. I love this site, I just hated the sharp issue...and I just tried the 480 trick and...BAM! (ne Emeril reference intended) VERY sharp...the face of the snowman figurine if you care to look. It was shot witht the nikon 60mm micro...I am so happy now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Thank you so much...I will try a 480 X 640 again. Seems like I used to do that here with no problem, then I went larger because my photos seemed small compared to others'. I'll try going back to that. If that doesn't do it, I'll try TIFF. Thanks, Terry!

Back again...replying to myself. :) I tried the 480 X 640...helped the sharpness, but I am still getting the pink blotches. Heather replied to my email and said she has seem them before and they are artifacts and to try TIFF. I have never tried saving as TIFF, and I ended up with a humongous file size, so I guess I'll just give it up for tonight. :S
Seems to me this is just happening since I got Photoshop and started playing with color curves.
But still weird how it only shows up here at BP! Do you think they could fix the glitch? Why wouldn't it happen at other sites?
Oh well, there goes my entry for the day. I tried 3 other photos and got the same dang pink artifacts, so I deleted them all. Ugh.
Thanks and goodnight!

I get the sharpness in my (recently) uploaded pictures (see the ones in my gallery with frames) by using Helicon Filter. BP says to size it to 500 pixels on the shorter side, but it resizes it down to 480 after that, so you should always resize it to 480 on the short side. Now, in Helicon Filter, the downsizing produces better results than I've noticed from Picasa. You can size the picture down, and before saving it, sharpen whatever areas you want on the smaller version so it looks just perfect small, and this is just how it will look when uploaded.

Ditto! And saving as a TIFF (finally figured it out thanks to Deb H...) gets rid of the pink artifacts, too.
Although I still think BP needs to figure out why it glitches that way. Thanks!

I haven't noticed pink artifacts (I upload at full jpeg quality.). But wouldn't it bother BP and people viewing your pictures if you keep uploading huge TIFF files (unless BP changes it into jpeg)? Ping would take less room. Has anyone tried uploading as png?

Ariel The Tiff's Are Around 1MB For A 480 By 750 Hardly Enough To Fret About:-) Png's, PSD's Are Also Accepted But Will Pan Out To Be Around 1MB Files At Those Sizes.
If I Remember The File Size Should Be Limited To 2.5MB or Less So Your Well Within The Guidelines.
Go Here Ariel:

Yes I just tried the png and that also worked better, but since I used the 480 resize the jpgs also work when I save in Maximum size

I can't imagine anyone doing this but you only have to resize for the short side at 480. Don't mess with the length. Let your editing software automatically size the long side for you.
