Photography Question

Memory 2 gig sd card, time between pics

Hello! I just bought my first big boy camera! Nikon D80. My question is when I ordered it via phone call from TX to NY, the guy in NY was so rude to me and tried to get me to upgrade to bigger everything. He was telling me that with a 2 gig SD card I will have to wait 12 sec's between pic's, is this true? I have to say , I was blown away that he was so rude, I almost bought elsewhere!

Out of curiousity, what company did you buy it from? Be careful of online purchases because although some a legit, obviously...others aren't. The same thing happened to me when I was going to (but didn't) buy online from expresscameras.com. The guy was rude and talked his way into trying to upgrade everything and the price was going to double or triple what I was originally interested in. He said the Canon 20D battery had a special battery that wasn't available except thru them and Canon. HAHA, yeah right, buddy and he was going to charge me like $200 for it. BE careful, a lot of these are scams. Do your research =)Oh but to answer your question (that would help, huh?)...maybe someone else can answer too, but I've never heard of it taking that long....

It was an Ebay package with a company that has 7000 sales with a 99.9% positive rating! JK digital I believe! They tried the same thing with the battery also and told me that I could not get a high speed card localy! The guy truley put me down for not being a camera expert! I would have told him to kiss off, but I had research these package deals for about a month! Its to late now, I just hope evrthing gets here ok, by X-MAS!

At least it sounds like a legit company. What a wonderful way for the guy to react around the holidays, huh? But at least you did your research and got a good deal for you. I hope you get it in time too!! Good luck!

The guy was lying to try to get you to spend more. This sounds suspiciously similar to the Bait & Switch scam artists like expresscameras.com that Teresa mentioned.

One of the other big scammers is bestpricecameras.com, and they used to operate another site called jandkcameras.com. That site has been shut down, but maybe they moved on to eBay.

You should check with them to see if your camera has been shipped yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they tell you that it is "backordered". This is what they say when they haven't made enough profit by selling you add-ons and overpriced accessories. It means they don't plan on sending you the camera. If this is the case, you should contact eBay about cancelling the transaction, and contact your credit card company about blocking them from charging your card. If they've already charged you, you may be able to get it reversed.

Just curious - if it was an eBay package, why was the order placed by phone? Did they tell you to call to "confirm your order"? That is usually the first step. They need to get you on the phone to convince you that you don't know what you're talking about and you need to buy the extras.

Good luck,

Hello, Chris V. Sorryit took so long to reply, but I have to say after I read your responce about J&K cameras I almost threw up! That was the company! And out of pure embarrasment, I could'nt respond until I actualy got the camera. I got It today, 3 days shipping as promised in brand new sealed box with all accessories! I will tell you this, I wouldn't reccomend them to my worst enemey, because the upsale was horrible! And I found out they lied about a couple things. Well anyway I am so excited about my new D80 and cant wait to learn how to use it.lol! Thanks for the warning, but unfortunetly it was a day late for me. Happy holidays!

I've been buying camera "stuff" via the Internet for many years. I started with the major advertisers in photo magazines, ordering by phone, and just gravitated to the Internet.

It's good you got the camera you wanted in sound shape. But, the experience you described and others confirmed is faily typical of a lot of "second place" resellers.

The threads throughout BP are resounding in their praise of B&H Photo. I've recommended B&H myself, and also from NYC - Adorama, Abe's of Maine and from Boston, Hunt's Camera. In fact, I bought my Canon 30D from Hunt's this summer.

In general, if you use the Internet, you need to know what you want because there's, generally, no one to whom you can ask questions. If you use the phone, and you hit one of those loser-types, you'll face bait-and-switch almost as routine.

I have an Account with Adorama - have had you many years. When I bought my EOS 3 in the late 1990's, I ordered on a Saturday, "body only." On Sunday, when the store reopened, I had a phone call from one of the salesmen caling to check whether I'd forgotten to order a lens. Yes, he hoped to increase my purchase, but it was simply a question - and there was no pressure to buy anything more at all.

For anyone reading this thread, stick with the resellers recommended by BP members. Stay away from places like bestpricecameras.com. Be careful of e-Bay, even if some of us have had success there. Avoid any site that advertises an unbelievable price - it probably means: no battery, no manual, etc.
