Slave flash with the Canon 580 I've read a number of forums on the subject but am still left confused. I have the Canon 20D with the 580 speedlite. I'm doing more interior shots now and am looking for a slave system to light up the far corners in wide angled shots. Do I have to buy another 580 or can I get away with another (cheaper) model and do I have to buy any transmitter equipment or do they synch with each other? I need to get my letter to Santa this weekend so any points in the right direction woulld be much appreciated!

Rebecca, You could buy another 580EX, or save a little and get a 430EX. The 550EX and 420EX are both discontinued, so you might find a deal on one of those, and they would also work as slaves to your 580. The cheap (and weak) 220EX will not work as a wireless slave. You don't need any additional transmitter equipment to make this work. The wireless operation is built into the flashes. Have fun,

I use the 430ex, works great, wireless, just remember to turn the infared toward your master flash for best results.

You can also use a wireless slave flash or any of a dozen flash units designed to use with cameras in conjunction with their pop-up nits. This is a very economical solution. For instance, I have a peanut flash that comes with a mini tripod. It's built-in photoelectric cell fires the flash in sync with any other unit and it cost me $20. I have two larger units (GN 80) that works exactly the same way and cost $30. A unit with a power output and specs similar to those of a standard flash gun would set you back maybe $120 (eg see http://www.srelectronics.com/). The only thing to watch out for is that they can be adjusted to fire with the main flash rather than the pre-flash that the unit uses for white balance correction. You can also buy inexpensive flash triggers ~ just attach a standard flash to one and it becomes a remote slave flash, so any flash gun you presently own becomes a slave. Which is great if your old flash became obsolete when you moved from film to digital! Sunpak and Vivitar are 2 companies that make these triggers. I'm sure there are others. Merry Christmas
