Photography Question

George

Why flickr?

I went browsing around flickr today and didn't really see anything special about it. What is it that photographers like about it over other photo hosters?

I understand that Yahoo bought it. I use the SBC Yahoo browser and when I click "sign up" on the flickr site it logs me out of my sbc yahoo browser. What's that all about?

Will my Yahoo Photos be integrated into flickr or will flickr people be integrated into Yahoo or will they stay seperate?

Maybe ask around on flickr for all that?

I don't see flickr as really being geared toward photographers. It's a social networking site like MySpace, but with an emphasis on pictures. After all, most teens and young adults have digicams or camera phones, so this gives them a place to post their snapshots and collect virtual friends.

Flickr is a good way to meet people that you have common interests with. For example one of the things I like about flickr is that you can form or join special interest groups such as the Nikon group or Rangefinder group which I think is very cool. I'm in a Fly Fishing group and a few others. My original reason for uploading to Flickr was to direct traffic to my site on Betterphoto. People who want to see more of my work come to Betterphoto. I think some of the things on Flickr could be very interesting to see on BP. For example the ability to form special interest groups. You can also search with keywords that are in your profile for other people that share your interest. All you have to do is click on one of the words or phrases in your profile and everyone who has the same word or phrase in their profile will come up. That's very cool. I joined my space yesterday. I find myspace is harder to navigate than Flickr. There's still a lot that I haven't figured out about it. You don't seem to be able to use the keywords like Flickr. Flickr is quick and easy to navigate. Most of it is simple common sense. Uploads are also very fast. Myspace seems to take forever. Basically Flickr is what you make it.

I've been a member of flickr for 3years now.I do have to say it certainly has its benefits.I'm not promoting it as being the best thing since sliced bread or anything but I have found that using flickr has given me some feedback on my pics. There are many many professional photographers that use flickr and also people in the multimedia industry.Apart from the fact that I have made friends for life through this website it has also given me the opportunity to converse with people who know about the photography industry and can give me personally pointers on what I'm doing right or wrong.I'm grateful of flickr!
