Proper setting for fast moving subject

Hello
I've got a Canon digital G1 camera and would like to know how to take good photos of fast moving subjects ie: hockey players. I've tried the basic settings from the manual and not getting any quality pictures.
Thanks in advance
Henry

From the G1 product brochure I have here, the G1 is an amazing flexible camera. There's a mode called Tv, which means you set the shutter speed, and the camera sets the proper aperture. You need a shutter of probably 1/250 sec to stop fast action. This situation, esp if it's ice hockey, is difficult. Maybe the lens can't open wide enough to give you the right amount of light to compensate for that fast shutter speed. A pro with a powerful flash would be challenged by this situation. You'd get better action shots outdoors, or connect this camera to a stronger flash.
