Water Fall photos

Planning on shooting a water fall and want to capture the water flowing but stopped. Have forgotten my lessons learned recently and can not remember if I need to slow the shutter speed or increase it. Can someone offer advise
Thank you, Ellison

A fast shutter speed, eg. 1/500, will completely freeze the water. A slower shutter speed, eg. 1/30, will give the illusion of motion. Going slower then 1/30, you definately need a tripod. If you have one and can use some film, I'd suggest taking shutter speeds from 1/1000 all the way to 1/4. See which photos you like best.

  David,
Thank you for your response. Have tripod will shoot...don't mind using the film if it helps me learn how it all works. Love the suggestion of running down(or up)the shutter speeds should make for intresting photos!

I can tell you right now if you want a dramatic effect then 1sec. with tripod is what you should use.
