Photography Question

Heatwave?

Now - this is definitely the wrong season to be posting this question as it's now winter - but here goes:

Is it possible to capture the "heatwaves" that you see during the summer (rising from roadways, stretches of flat land) in camera? I've got a great photo idea but those heatwaves are an integral part. I know they can be captured on film because you see them in movies all the time - but can it be captured using still photography?

I wouldn't see why not. You know your camera sees the same things your eyes do, just through glass. Okay so you're driving along that road and you see that heatwave for a split second. Slam on the brakes (and hope the people behind you know how to swerve) and go back to the same location you saw it. Now throw your camera to your face and yeah it shouldn't be anything special. Prolly just the key is finding the spot where you get the best view. Prolly one of those things you just have to try.

Yes you can, but there's a difference with still versus seeing/video/movie film.
With looking at it and movies you see the occillations, or movement of the heat waves distorting light waves.(Jon Close, I know it's the density differences in the air caused by heat, but don't have a better way to describe it at the moment, yuk yuk...) So while you looking at it, you really get the affect of distant objects and the wavering distortion.
Take a picture of it, it doesn't show like you might hope. Freezing it, what you get appears to be a picture with no clear focus. Like a bad lens. But what can get you the image that you're wanting is a very long focal length, something 800mm or higher, and shooting close to ground level at a flat area that has lots of distance to it.
