Photography Question

Kate L. McCrea

What is a good software to use?

OK, I am NOT a professional photographer, I just enjoy taking pictures and fiddling with them on my computer. I am looking a for a more advanced software (I currently use Microsoft Picture It! 9) but I am on a tight budget (Photoshop is NOT in that budget range) and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a decent software package that will not break the bank. I am hoping to spend less that $150. Mind you, NOT a professional, so it doesn't have to be super-duper fancy, but would like a decent bit of options.

Kate, check out Photoshop Elements - this is the "junior" version of Photoshop that costs about $100 and has almost all the features of the full-blown package.

Like Bob says: Photoshop Elements is good. It also costs US$ 100. So try Picasa first: Picasa is FREE! And you can get it NOW! Here: http://picasa.google.com/. Get it and see if you like it.

Good luck.

For the price, Paint Shop Pro X is hard to beat. Now that version XI is out, version X is very inexpensive. The other day I saw it on Amazon.com for $10 after rebates. There was a $30 rebate good till January and another $20 rebate good only in November.

Picasa is a good. PS elements has more features and although it is not free you can usually find it either on sale or after rebate for $70. Now that Elements 5 is out you can probably get Elements 4 for less. However PSE 5 has features which make it worth considering.

I have to agree, PSE would be a good choice. I've got PSE 3, and it does just about everything I need it to. The only thing I don't like, is that it doesn't have a Channel Mixer. Though there are plugins for that.

  Kate,
Have you looked at Microsoft Digital Image Pro? It is a more advanced and feature-rich version of Picture It, so it will have a very familiar feel for you.

The difference is that most of the image adjustments, enhancements, etc. will have more fine tuning available, and there will be other tools that are not available in the version you currently have.

As an upgrader, you should be able to find Digital Image Pro for around $50 bucks after rebate.

Good luck!
