wedding photography

Hello everyone!! I know someone will point me in the right direction. I was asked to take photos for my step daughters wedding. I have months to read up and do whatever (practice?). Is there any good books/cd's/dvd's, out there that would give me the basics? I have a Canon 20D with a 430ex flash. if that helps anyone. Thank you so much!!

If you want to be a good future STEP MOTHER IN LAW...and also ENJOY the wedding RUN and hire a professional to do it...believe and trust me when I tell you that is not WISE to photograph a relative's wedding, let alone your step daughter's.

Well, if she cant afford one and doesn't care if they all turn out then I say go for it. Otherwise, hire someone and shadow them(ask if its ok). You'd be suprised how hard it is even after a year of shooting them.

There is no quick Fix for wisdom. Time and lots of trial error is what you need. Just like anything in life. If it was easy no one would hire a photography.

Thanks for the response. We've already discussed the idea of hiring one.. and it wasn't in the grand scheme of things.
thanks!

If photography is not a priority, then just go shoot it. People work and study at this one aspect of photography their whole lives to master it. It's kind of like saying, "I want to paint a masterpiece on the cieling of my house, and I have to have it done next week. How do I do that?" The answer is: you can't do that. But, you can certianly show up with you camera and take photos.

I highly recommend watching this DVD: http://www.joebuissink.com/home.php, click on DVD, and buy "Defining the Moment".

Hey Jerry, glad to have you back, missed you around here.

Anywho, although not meaning to start a debate Tracy, inevitably this topic does :)

I very much feel that it depends on the type of wedding and their expectations. I'm getting remarried in the spring, and it's 25 people, 10 min ceremony and a private dinner. I don't want to pay $600 - $2000 to have someone take photos. I got a hobbyist to shoot it for me instead. Will they be awe inspiring? Nope, but it'll be covered. And I know that, and it's the choice I've made. I'm spending my money on a killer all-inclusive hotel in the caribbean instead, and have a photog lined up there to take photos on the beach in our wedding clothes. Good compromise for me :)

If your stepdaughter is having a small-budget affair, GO FOR IT!! Your gallery is beautiful, you obviously know how to handle your camera.

Wish I could help with info to study up on, but I don't have much there. Just wanted to give you my support b/c you'll get a lot of "don't do it" answers.

I've done a couple of weddings and my best advice is to study other people's wedding work for posing concepts, it's the part I still struggle with. My favorite is www.daniellez.com

And I usually keep a "must have" shot list with me because it's easy to forget stuff that day.

You wouldn't believe the complaints I've heard from brides who wished they had spent some money on their photographer. The day goes by very quickly and the best thing is your wedding album. To relive the moments and feel that rush again.

I've heard that too. And I've heard people say they got carried away & wish they hadn't spent $20,000 on their wedding day, it was just ONE day afterall. Depends on the person.

If people spent 1/2 as much time worrying about the marriage as they do their wedding day, they'd be much better off. (I can say that, I'm divorced, lol)

The people that don't have money to burn think it is a waste of money, but the high end brides think of how it could have been better.

You get to play King and Queen for a day with servants, gourmet foods and flowers all around.
