Photography Question

Irene Troy

which PS class?

As some of you already know (due to my many questions about Photoshop) I really need to take a class. However, I am having trouble figuring out which class would be best. I have been working in PS-CS2 for about a year now and have some familiarity with the software; however, there are many gaps in my knowledge and I do find myself struggling at times to do more complicated things. I am debating between Lewis Kempler’s class on exposure and color correction in PS – a class that addresses the issues I most struggle with; or Kathleen Carr’s Photoshop for Photographers class. I don’t want to take on a class that is beyond my abilities, but I also don’t want to be bored by a class that is covering things I already know. If anyone has taken either class I would love to hear your opinion and experience. If possible, I would also like to know how much PS experience you had prior to taking either class. Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some insight!

Irene

  Hi Irene,
Nice hearing from you! This is really a good question, and although I haven't taken these courses :-) I am familiar with them. My concern would be the same as yours: Kathleen's Beginning PS for Photographers class is really excellent and I highly recommend it ... but only for those who are brand-new (or close to brand-new) to the program.

You may have already thought of it, but just in case, here's my suggestion: Email Lewis ("contact instructor" button near bottom of main course page), and tell him you are interested in his Exposure & Color Correction class. Then tell him specifically the types of things that you have already been doing in PS ... however basic, and even if you don't always do some of them successfully :-) These can be related to curves, layers, anything. Lewis can then get an idea of what you know ... and whether you have a handle on the fundamentals required for his class.

I'm thinking that Lewis's class might indeed be the course for you - since you have been using PS for a while. And, even if you have gaps in your knowledge and struggle with certain issues ... well, if we all knew it all, why take a class?!?!? LOL

Of course, others might jump in here who have taken these classes ... these are just some ideas. Again, you may have already considered it, but sometimes people forget about asking the instructor directly (and we all enjoy advising prospective students). BTW, if you contact Lewis, be sure to tell him I said "hi"!

Have fun deciding, Irene!

Hi Kerry! Thanks for your response and for the ideas. I am currently out on the road, heading home after a 7 week trip and feeling really tired and more than a little scatter brained! I will send an e-mail to each instructor asking for their input and opinions. I have no problem trying to fill gaps in my knowledge if Lewis thinks that I have at least the bare minimum knowledge for his course. I have and use Scott Kelby’s and Rob Shepherd’s PS books all the time and can always refer to these if something in the class is beyond my current knowledge.

Thanks, again for your help!

Irene

  Hi Irene,
You're welcome, and thanks for the followup ... sounds like a great plan! I have those books, too, but particularly appreciate Rob Rob Sheppard's books - excellent (as is Scott Kelby's) but Rob is an esteemed BP instructor too, of course!! :-)

Oh yes ... a 7-week trip?!? Sounds reeeeeally awesome ... and no wonder you're a "little scatter-brained" ... I would be as well :-)
Kerry
