Photography Question

External flash for incandescent lighting

I have an Olympus C-750 UZ which generally takes very nice pictures. However, pictures taken in low light situations - such as in the evening under incandescent lighting are rather poor. Will an external flash help in this situation? I'm looking at purchasing the FL40 external flash that was designed for use with this camera, but I'm not sure if it will really solve the problem.

An external flashgun has much more flash power than your built-in flash, Ann Marie. So it will throw much more light on your subject. That means you can use smaller apertures (f/stops) which will increase the Depth of Field and improve your image quality.

Imo, the on-board flash - the C-750 UZ even has a smaller one than most of its competitors! - is only useful as a fill-in flash in the daytime. Sometimes...

Thanks very much for your response! I thought that was the case. Just an fyi - I decided to instead move on to the SLR world and just purchased a Nikon D50. I know that the D50 will soon be discontinued but it should be a good next step. So - I'll soon be taking more classes! Thanks - Ann
