Photojournalists – HARKEN!

Last night, I had the opportunity to shoot Bill Cosby for the paper for which I shoot. The church was relatively dark, even though there were tv lights there (as they were shooting a documentary for PBS) and I was in the balcony. I had to shoot at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200. Noise wise – the shots are great – the D200 is showing it’s stuff with that! Otherwise, how can I improve for the next assignment. My mentor says I must tell a story with each shot. A couple of these I think I have, a couple I know I haven’t. Any suggestions for future assignments?

If the subject of your assignment is Bill Cosby interacting at the church then I think the first and last image you posted present his interaction at the church the best. The hand in the air is good and him looking down at the medal being presented is good also. Did you shoot a lot of images? One mistake that I still make from time to time is not shooting enough coverage. Lo and behold when I get a chance to look at my work, someone has their eyes closed, another has a silly look and yet another is doing something weird with his mouth. So make sure you shoot enough coverage. Gestures from the subject are always good. Watch a news conference sometime a watch how many flashed go off when the person conducting the conference uses his hands. Editors like gestures, it helps give emphasis to the image.

Say you’re right about the D200 and noise. It is clearly the best Nikon model when it comes to noise. I love mine!

Cameras (apart from the PBS video ones) were only allowed for the first ten minutes of the affair, and no flash. So, in that time, I took about 90 shots. I have closeups of him and others that I know are good, I need help with the "interactiveness" of photojournalism! I tried to shoot some of each of the most prominent guests. The lady in the wheelchair is Dr. Dorothy Height, who was one of the original six people who launched the Civil Rights era with Dr. King. I tried to pick shots wisely (gestures as you say) and not just throw mud against the wall to see what stuck. I also tried to get each of the speakers at the dais with Cosby in the background. Thanks for your advice, Ray!

Yes forced to only shoot from a balcony and only within a 10 minute time span does limit your work. Sounds like you did the best you could given the time and space. I shoot a lot of images of paramedics interacting with their patient’s and this is what I love about being a spot news photographer. You only have a few seconds to think of the composition and then the moment is gone!! Flowers or landscape you got all day to stew on composition.

As you hone your craft you will find what works best for your type of photojournalism. Many of the greats you will see some kind of “signature” within their work. For my style of photojournalism, I like to get really close to the medics working which gives the viewer the feeling of being upfront and close. You will see in some of my work I’m only a few feet from the action. Be really critical of your work…I am as to mine! This in my opinion is how you improve.

Ugh… yeah, I guess you can say I am sort of. I’m now considered an “embedded” photojournalist for the EMS agency you see in many of my images. They allow me to ride with the crews and supervisors on EMS calls. I also will chase down calls from my home as well, but now I have a very good reputation with the EMS, Fire and Police in the county that I now enjoy full-unrestricted access to any incidents. Hence, how I can get so close to the action! I’m a contributing photographer for a couple of EMS publishers and magazines that are published in California and I string for the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper here in Missouri.
