help with lenses

Hi,

I currently own a Fiji S5100. I understand how to use all the settings, and have decided to move up to an SLR. I am in no way a pro, but I think I have a little bit more of an understanding than someone completely new to SLR. My problem is that I know absolutely nothing about lenses. I will be buying a Canon xti right after Christmas (unless Santa brings me one :).

After reading mixed reviews, I have decided to opt for the body only. I need to decide on what type of lens to start with. I have been reading hours and hours of information, and still can't seem to make up my mind.

For the most part I take nature pictures, anything from mountains, streams, or close ups of flowers. I also shoot my daughter's soccer and basketball games (both are inside now that it's winter), and in the summer we go to a couple NASCAR races where I tend to go crazy and shoot about 600 pictures durring the weekend.

For right now I would like to get something that will give me the most range for what I need.

My gallery can give you a pretty good range of what I like to shoot and would need.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Sandi

The best standard zooms, that range from ~17mm for moderate wide angle for landscape and indoors, to ~50+ for short tele for portrait/close up are:
EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Macro
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro

There are quite a few telezooms that would be appropriate for indoor sports and races. f/2.8 zooms are going to be the best, but they are very heavy and have less zoom range. f/4 or f/4-5.6 will be smaller and lighter, but will require higher ISO settings to get action stopping shutter speeds. Image Stabilization (IS in Canon, OS in Sigma) is a plus for steadying hand-held shots.
EF 70-200 f/2.8L USM
EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM
EF 70-200 f/4L USM
EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM
EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 EX DC HSM
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG HSM Macro
Sigma 80-400 f/4.5-5.6 EX OS
on a tighter budget:
EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM
Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro
Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro

Nice photos Sandi! what kind of money do you want to spend on the lenses? I like this setup.
Canon 17-40L $650
Canon 50 1.4 $?
Canon 70-200 F2.8 or F/4

Thanks guys. So, a standard zoom is a good start? Then go from there?

I know a good sports lens is going to cost some money, but I have til summer to save for it. Hopefully by then, I'll be ok at adjusting and focusing.

I guess around $400 would be my limit to start up with since I have to switch pretty much everything. (the fuji takes a different type of card, battery, and I think I'm going to be switching to a Cokin filter system)

Oliver,

What lens did you use for your race shots, and how far away were you?

Canon 1Ds MarkII camera with Canon 70-200 2.8IS and non IS (because a buddy packed the wrong lens one day) I used a Canon 100MM prime on some of my shots as well since that lens is AWESOME and at night races shows so little noise. At the motorcycle race I was about 12ft away at about 100mph behind a really fat photographer...you know...a living airbag.JK I shoot the photos RAW and can crop the hell out of them if need be but for AMA i'm right on top of the drivers. You can see the RPM's on some of the photos I have.

OK Sandi here's what you do, wait till January and the new Canon 70-200 F/4IS is out. The old F/4 non IS drops huge and you buy that used or new.
