Photography Question

Lorrie

Which telephoto zoom?

I have been researching telephoto zooms to use on my Nikon D200 and have pretty much decided to purchase either the 50-500mm or 170-500mm Sigma w/1.4 teleconverter. The 170-500 has an asperical element which is supposed to improve sharpness of images, the other one does not but does have other features that the 170-500 doesn't have. I would expect to use a tripod always, and other methods, such as mirror lock up at times to improve sharpness. Are both lenses equal as far as image quality or would one be better than the other? I would appreciate all input on this and especially any comments from first hand experience. Thanks

  Lorrie,

I have the 50-500 for film and use it on my D70S. I really like the lens. The only problem I have had with it is the lens lock to prevent it from creeping broke and had to be sent off for repair.

You will need a minimum of a monopod when using this lense unless you are shooting in very bright sunshine.

Oh, be prepared for strange looks and stares due to the size of the lense.

I don't have any experience with the other lense you mention.

No.

"or would one be better than the other?"

Yes.
The 170-500mm has better optical quality than the 50-500mm.

Thanks so much for the input! First time for me to take part in any kind of internet forum. Didn't expect such quick feed back! I'll definitely be checking this site regularly.

This is not going to be an easy choice!
