A good travel camera

Hi-

I am about to take a vacation to New Zealand and I don't have a camera. I've always used cheap cameras since I never had any money. I would like to buy a good camera that will last me a long time and travels well. I'm trying to keep the cost under $300.

Any suggestion or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi, Phil.if I where in your position I would narrow my options to an Automatic focus (A.F.)camera.The reason I say this is it seems you have limited experience of cameras. Most of today`s a.f. cameras have manual override ,so you can sharpen your skill on auto,& hone your skills on manual.Best of both worlds.I cannot tell you exactly which camera to purchase but a look at photo.magazines can give you an idea. They often have comperative test of new and older cameras.I would suggest you look at the popular makes Nikon & Canon for example.
Also have a look at e-bay auctions on your computer.Just enter e-bay & go.
I purchase all my photographic equipment this way,and save loads. It would seem most photographers look after there equipment,so disciption of condition is honest.Mint means as new.EXC++ is very slight use. EXC+ sighs of light use.etc. etc...
Hope my suggestions are helpful.

Couldn't agree with Roland more about Ebay. Some inexpensive cameras to consider would be Minolta QTsi, HTsi, STsi and the Pentax ZX-30, ZX-10, ZX-50. THe 10 and 50 are no longer made, so you should find very good deals on used or "lingering stock" one's.
While shopping for a friend, I saw a Pentax ZX-50 for $179 from a camera store (who apparently sells them often). I ended up getting her one from the Pentax corp. store here in Denver, CO., but the Ebay one is a GREAT deal. My suggestion is to check out the ZX-50 or ZX-10.
