Photography Question

Canon Strobe ?

I just exchanged my Rebel XTi for a new one after getting a 99 error. With this one....there is a strobe lighting on the flash when I have tried to take pictures. It doesn't happen all the time, but its distubing. When the strobe thing starts up, no pictures can be taken. Is this normal ? or did I get another lemon ? I read somewhere about being able to shut the strobe lighting off....but can't see where I would do that. Please help. I love the camera, but this is getting frustrating.

Built-in flash or an accessory in the hotshoe (brand/model)? If it is the built-in, I think it might be the autofocus assist light. In dim/dark conditions the camera will flicker the flash to give the AF sensors more light. If you don't want it, set Custom Function 5 to "1" (does not fire), or "2" (only fires the AF assist light of accessory speedlights).

If an accessroy flash is strobing and causing ERR 99, it may be an incompatible model (not E-TTL capable), or faulty. ERR 99 is also associated with incompatible third party lenses and it may only be a coincidence that the flash acts up.

Thank you so much for your help.

My first one with the 99 error had something to do with the memory card and the leaver which ejects the CF card.

I think thats why I was shocked when the second one started this strobe light effect. This didn't occur on my other one, so I thought something was wrong with it. Decided to do some research before I took it back to the store.

I love this camera so much, and was a little bummed I may have to take this one back as well.

I did find where you set the custom function to 5 to 1 and did the changes. Will this also take effect when I have it in auto mode?

Can wait to test it out tonight. Thanks again for being there!

Custom Functions have no effect in the "Basic" exposure modes (green box and the icon settings).

Wonder why it didn't do it with the first camera, but does it with this one? When its doing the strobe thing, I can't take a shot. This is so frustrating.

  What lens are you using?
Also, wrt strobing and not being able to take a shot: if the autofocus mode is One-Shot or AI-Focus, the shutter will not open unless the camera can confirm focus. If you have a difficult subject (low contrast, dim light) you may get the flickering flash (AF assist light) and the camera not fire because it cannot auto focus. In that situation, use manual focus, or switch to AI Servo which will let the shutter fire even if autofocus is not confirmed. That doesn't explain the ERR 99 problem, though.
