How to make images sharp once they are scanned.

My recent entry in my gallery, Autumn Berries does not show a sharp on screen as it does in the print from the lab. How can I correct this problem?

Do you have any way of knowing if it looks sharp if uploaded to other galleries online? With BP regardless of what the guidelines say my photos will not look sharp unless I resize them to 480 pixels on the short side. I know the guidelines suggest 500, but when I size them to 500 they do not look sharp.

Are you scanning prints or negatives?
Scanning the negative with a dedicated film scanner will produce better results than scanning the actual print.
Normal sharpening techniques will help correct the overall softness incurred during scanning if the original is of high quality.

The "480" trick Sharon mentioned definately works to produce sharper uploads to BP. Also,...upload TIFF files instead of JPEG.
They take a little longer to go through but they look better after BP re-formats them.

Thanks so much Sharon and Bob. It is just so frustrating when this happens. I will try both ideas. Thanks

Bob, this was a scanned print. I will try scanning the neg. and hope I get better results. Thanks again.
